here was just a couple of ripples in one corner that gave it away, but I had to look hard to find them.

did not notice them till I read that...
Bloody fantastic system - something to be truly proud of!

I am planning to get some silver perch this weekend....do you think I should quarantine them in a tub dosed with salt before I add them to my main tank?

How long do you think I should treat them for ? 3,4 or 5 days?

I think you should be looking more to 3 - 4 weeks, the idea is to clear any problems (such as ICH) caused by fish stress - dose to 3ppm.

3-5 days is generally used when purging the fish before eating

:fish: = Monya's purged fish
:glasses5: = happy Monya

Do you think that long for a preventive treatment.

You could make it less and be okay - that is what I will be doing in future tho.

My 1st lot of SP got ICH and it took 2 weeks to clear - but the the temp was above 24c

Salt at that level and for that long doesn't harm the bacteria or the plants - and I like to be safe

Update:
Got my pH up to 7.2 by adding some shell grit in the sump tank and also used some bi-carbonate to help too.
Been feeding goldfish 3 x a day to try to build up some ammonia to get the tank cycling..no luck, so added 12 Silver perch at approx. 150mm-200mm long (4-6 inches) today.
Temperature of tank is now sitting at 18 deg C (64 deg F) thanks to a 400w heater to help things along...The greenhouse onlys helps to raise tank temps if sun shines  With a bit of foam insulation over and around the tank I hope to get the temps to 20-22 deg C (68-71 deg F).
The Silvers look like a shark compared to the goldies...and the goldies are quick to get out of there way

Don't be too concerned about those temps LB, thats not so bad... My temps in the silver perch are down to less than 15 degC but they are still eating.. Not quite as much as normal, but not too bad..
