If it's the nitrogen you could probably add some water plants like duckweed to use some up and then remove some duckweed regularly to keep the levels where you want. I've used duckweed and water hyacinth this way - Water Hyacinth I would just compost and duckweed gets fed to the chickens. I've also seen azolla mentioned as a chicken feed so it would probably work as well - best to check and be sure if you go with this though.

Another alternative if you have certain types of filtration is to just not clean them as much as that should allow some of the nitrogen to be released as gas.

Thanks Scotty. Wish I could use the filter idea but with the number of fish I have I am afraid that would cause other issues. I might have to look more into the water hyacinth and duckweed.

Eggs arrived about a month ago and now I am feeding the little fry! Here starts another season of keeping fish and trying and perfecting my hand in aquaponics!

congrats on the new start. I messed up got too busy this year and missed getting trout in my system for the winter.

Starting to move the fry out of the hatching troughs into the grow out tanks. Lots of grading coming up! A little behind on starting lettuce and spinach.

I am attempting to raise fry for the first time. So far out of hundreds I have only lost a couple. They were the mutant ones. lol

That being said Mine are just goldfish. Still a chance to learn something... and my kids are loving it.

Goldfish are pretty hardy compared to trout. I have lost a few thousand already. Pretty hard at times to keep things going with out a hiccup. But that is with starting with 100,000. Now that we have warmed up from -30 to close to 0 it makes heating the fish tanks a little easier. I like keeping water at 14 degrees as it is a good compromise. A little warmer and I could get good growth but will start having issues with oxygen and ammonia/nitrite.
