Here’s the latest photo after another week’s growth. My math was wrong and the plants have been in for 25 days now.



We pulled a couple of dwarf purple beans this morning and just had to eat them immediately.



I’ve added another couple of growbeds. One is already planted and the other still needs to be finished - I’m making grow towers for the unfinished bed.



And the overall how it looks view. The drain to the ST on the second bed is temporary till I add the next bed in.



Our dogs love to photobomb at every opportunity :-)

The original bed has labels too but we can’t see them anymore. To say we are impressed with the growth is an understatement. Some of the plants in bed 2 were from the same batch of seeds as the plants in bed 1, but due to lack of grow bed space were kept in our greenhouse. The difference in growth is staggering.

Another week has gone by and here’s how it looks now. We have harvested some lettuce leaves and herbs but it’s still growing. The tomatoes are beginning to flower and baby zucchini’s are also starting to grow.

The second grow bed after one week:



Our third grow bed is now planted as of this morning. The grow towers aren’t pretty but hopefully they work.



I’ve added more gold fish to keep the nitrate levels up with the extra beds.

Next on the to do list is add some silver perch, a DWC raft tank and either another media bed with more grow towers or another wicking bed.

I checked the FT water temp this morning. It was 15.5C which was surprisingly cool given the 35C+ days we’ve been having.

I like to keep the tomato’s separate as their root ball gets massive.

Almost covered the house now with GB1!

When you say keep tomatoes separate, do you mean further apart, in a different tank to the other veg or something else?

It’s good to have the cold beer close so I can watch the fish and plants grow in comfort :-)

Hi mate, I was growing tomato’s in half blue barrels and they would fill it with roots.
Great tomato’s though.

Hey mate, Is there any difference using half barrels vs tanks with almost flat bottoms? Does the difference in depth affect the plants or growth in any way?

This is all a learning curve for us. I guess there’s not much I can do about the potential for a massive root ball. Problem is we just love tomatoes too much so we’ll have to put up with the destruction they may cause.

Only less gb volume in the half barrel with same surface area. However, solids do concentrate to the middle of the bed, so there are less anaerobic corners, as such.

Tomatoes are usually very deep rooted grown in soil, 1-1.5m from memory. Tend to choke gb quicker like mint. Just needs a bit more maintenance is all.

Very nice picture, and encouraging results. A pity that Belgian weather can't compare to Aussie's. Now 2-7deg and our rain is not so nice... even if we have nice Xmas markets...



PS: OK, this one is in Holland. But still only 15km from home.
