HI All
I'm on the threshold of getting into aquaponics, but not quite there yet. At the moment I'm thinking that I'd probably grow jades, red claw, water chestnuts and a variety of edible greens.

Thing is that I've never tasted jade perch and I figure it'd be smart to make sure I like em before I get any.

Is there anyone in the Morayfield area who could sell me a table-sized jade that I could try? I've heard that they're quite a fatty fish and not to everyone's taste.

Also, is anybody successfully using small above ground pools (like the $150 Intex ones) rather than IBCs in their systems?

You can always give them to friends if you don't like them... Or just grow them to be behemoths. I had silver perch I kept for many years and they were HUGE!

I reckon my jade perch taste a lot like my silvers. And silver perch are commonly kept in aquariums in Chinese restaurants. So you might need to go out to dinner tomorrow night

I generally smoke my perch. They taste great. They do have quite a lot of fat... it's apparently high in omega 3. And it's quite separate from the white flesh, so easy to remove.

I started with silvers but jade perch grow much quicker. perfect for Brisbane in my opinion.

Actually I'm thinking I'm going to go ahead and set up a system anyway. I have to finish laying some decking boards and making a collapsible boat first, so probably in a couple of months.

I'm thinking 4 chop and flip IBCs with the 4th one used as a semi-in-ground sump and a bed at ground level for water chestnuts. I'd like to try 2 FTs with jade and the other with red claw with shadecloth folds for habitat.

Do you hot or cold smoke your fish?

Hot smoke. After spending a night in a tea flavoured brine.

I have a cold smoker device. But that's a project for Christmas holidays.

But I've tried the perch in various ways. Including a ceviche made by a Peruvian chef friend.

Aside from being smoked, when they're top notch, I'm not going to claim that perch are as good as Murray cod (see my other thread) or trout (not really practical for me). And I generally prefer ocean to freshwater fish. But they're perfectly good to eat.

if you have the skills to do decking and build a collapsible boat, I reckon you'll have no problems turning some ibc's into an aquaponics system.
