Bought a house that has a pool. Would rather use pool to grow fish and food or as a Zen garden than as a swimming pool with chemicals. How can I convert a 20,000 pool to an aquaponic system? It’s already chlorine free and has a couple frogs, surface skimmer bugs, and algae growing in it. Help, please.

There are quite a few pool conversions on the forum

Use the advanced search (The search button in the dark blue band near top of page , the box in the top corner is a general search )

Also have a look at viewtopic.php?f=18&t=12883&start=780&hilit=plj
Big tank system

And if you post up some photos people might take more interest and be able to give more specific ideas and advice.

Wow, nice pool!

well the simplest way would be to pump to media beds at pool edge and draining straight back into pool. The amount of media will determine maximum fish stocking density. The media might be your biggest cost unless you can get something for free, inert gravel, scoria etc.

DWC will save media costs but you will need to build filters with enough bio-filtration capacity for your fish.

yep - do what Terra suggests... lots and lots of advice

This is not true in a pool or high water volume system.
A lot of AP rules of thumb no longer apply - eg stocking, turnover of pool volume etc.

Chase up the pool related threads/posts - they have lots of links..... and ideas.

Add some glass shrimp/ghost shrimp as well (in a protected area) where they can wander into the fish area as a food supplement. Looks like you've got room for some solar panels as well if inclined to use solar to power your pumps or heat your water to extend growing season.
