Hi All,

I just start in Aquaponics and so far I'm loving it. Can’t wait to harvest my first veggies and fish.

My system is a basic IBC chop and flip that I started 3 weeks ago.

The Build :





I bought a large second hand system that had been left for some time. Nothing organic was salvageable. So I washed and cleaned everything! Two days none stop work!

I thought I’d start with one and start adding the rest once I got a handle on the first system.

Chopped IBC
No biofilter other than grow bed
Laguna Pump 3000LPH

Water:

Today
PH 8
Nitrates 0.25
Ammonia 0.5
Water Temp 23C



The PH has been at 8 since day one and the nitrates and ammonia spiked off the scale last week but seemed to have settled down this week. Might be down to the water change I did yesterday but I’m hoping its more to do with the system is settling in.

Fish and plants:



The system has just cycled with 10 silver perch and crushed limestone a week before as suggested by the Aquaponics store.

10 Silver Perch, plan on getting 10 more, consistently bigger ever second Monday if the system allows. Plan having 40-50

8 Lettuce
1 Red Climbing Spinach
3 Pumpkin
1 Spring Onion
3 Basil

And I threw in some broccoli seeds just to see what would happen.

So far the fish are still scared but starting to eat.

I am very keen to learn and open to any suggestions. Glad to be a part of something worthwhile!

Stop feeding your fish for a week or two until your levels drop right down, check the table below to get an idea about ammonia toxicity, pH and temperatures.
