The mob that wholesales these are about 15mins from my place. While they wouldn't sell them to me direct, the local hardware will stock them but quite a bit cheaper than what your kids have paid for them AM. WHere did they get it from?

McCracken's Water Services (spelling?) - a plumbing mob here in town - I did not buy it myself - the marine studies teacher went in and purchased it... but I do like what he bought :)

some new images of the student's system... all the GB's are filled and are doing well so far. Every single bed is fitted with an auto siphon and they are functioning well.
As an experiment we have included a paw paw in the last bed... just to see how well it will grow...

the experiment started earlier with the 2 different sized stones is progressing well, with the side with the finer gravel having a higher number of seeds sprouting... THe finer seeds seem to have fallen just too far down into the gravel, but each side has the same number of large seeds germinating... now to see how well they grow in the different sized stones...

We have also included a wire mesh for the cucumbers and snow peas to grow up...

Nice work AM... :) Can you raise the grid work for the climbing plants? I reckon you might want to start the climbing frame above the pipe work. Most climbing plant can get a good hold and start going up under their own weight, it's only once they get up a bit that they need the support..

rEGARDING THE CLIMBING FRAME - i WILL BE DOING WHAT i HAVE DONE TO THE OTHER CUCUMBER PLANT AND 'GUIDE' THE PLANT ALONG THE FRAME (damn caps lock!)
I am hunting around for longer lengths of wood/steel to put a higher grid in... I have the grid ready, just have to source the other material now :)

 ... hmmm, I guess I should have left space for the students ;)
but space is valuable and I want to fit as much in there as I can... slowly fill the entire space (hmmm, where will I put those towers... ;) )

Been watching the growth of the plants over the past week or so in the student's system... and all the plants seem to have slowed down (I have compared them to the plants in the other student's IBC system) ... I am beginning to think that the plants are wanting more nutrients than the fish can supply at the moment
I feed them 4 handfuls of barra pellets twice a day (and there are around 45 barra in the tank which look about 15 cm long)... the pump is removing all solids with ease so there is no buildup...
While its good to know that there is no excess nutes and nitrate in thewter, it is slightly frustration that the growth has slowed so much - was hopeing for a big green flush of plants when my BIL visits from South Africa in 3 weeks time :?

Do you have a test kit yet AM?

If it is in fact a nitrate problem - you can always add some extra ammonia during those late night visits - just don't drink too much alcohol first ;-)
