Try the search as it does pop up a bit but mostly is not typical of AP setups.

I have seen it used. They took out the sand and filled with bio balls.

Bio balls were expensive last time I checked, sand is a lot more economical. If it works.

Filter sand is a lot more expensive than normal washed sand.
