I don't care about growing pearls, but I am curious about the filtering help from mussels (or oysters if that's what we're talking about). I've seen vague comments about it around the forum but no detail. Anytime I can get a critter(or plant, etc...) to clean instead of me or a machine that needs power, I'm happy.

I know about marine oysters, they attach to objects and eat plankton. I understand freshwater eat algae. Oysters also filter about 50 gallons of water a day each. What I would like to know is where to buy them? When I Google search I only get oysters to eat or the same questions no one seems to know the answer to.

I live near a freshwater lake which has lots of little clams, as well as crayfish. I'm very wary of eating the clams though, as filter feeding bivalves accumulate toxins, and still/stagnant water bodies could easily have toxic algal blooms and the like.

I would also be a bit wary of eating bivalves from AP without using a UV steriliser to purge them of any potential nastiness like they do with commercial marine bivalves. But I wonder if they could be an additional food source for fish, and whether the fish would then end up with all of the accumulated toxins or not?

They filter the water from dirt and algae. but do they produce any waster for the plants? That's the main question.

It's a common misconception that they use nitrates, and compete with plants. Really they use suspended solids and excrete ammonia as a metabolic waste just like fish and crustaceans.
