A place to discuss aquaponics

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade from indoor goldfish and herbs in a tray to building an IBC or similar system. To do this I will need a suitable space, and suitable edible fish species. I have an old barn which could be easily reno'd and insulated, and with the proper set up kept above zero degrees in winter.

So my main question is which fish species am I allowed to grow for personal consumption in Nova Scotia.
I have read about peeps keeping Tilapia in heated tanks, Trout and Catfish in cold water above 10 degrees.

Any advise would be most welcome so I can start planning my barn & system in the right direction.

Probably best place to check is with you Ministry of Aquaculture/Fisheries/Environment. I think Nova Scotia has a Ministry of Aquaculture. Basically try one of them and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

Found this;

(a) “aquaculture” means the farming for commercial purposes
of aquatic plants and animals over which the Minister exercises
control but does not include raising or breeding in tanks, nets, pens or
cages of aquatic plants and animals either as aquarium species, in laboratory
experiments or by individuals on their own property as food
for their own use;


So I'm good to go (not covered by the act) for personal use and using a closed loop system and not emptying my tanks into river systems.

The only thing I'm unclear on is which species. Anyone on this forum live on the East Coast of Canada and had success/failures with warm water, cold water species ?
