I have 100 trout plus some Silver perch and the goldfish boss.

Water was 14.9°C last time i looked.

Doing a bit of cleaning up of the GB's this morning even though it was going to be a 37° C scorcher, Very fortunate because after a while beavering around I realised the water pump had not come on?

Further investigation revealed the circuit breaker had tripped!

The culprit was an auxiliary pump I'd been using to put fish water into the dirt garden had fused.

So the main pump for the AP system being on the same circuit had been off for at least 24 hrs, the only input was an air pump which was fortunately on another circuit.

Sort of hard to believe the 70 or so trout survived? Benefit of a large fish tank maybe?

On the plus side it was nice and cool in the pond while the mercury went soaring. According to the temp gauge the water got up to 23° C.

yes Scotty dodged a bullet for sure.

on the plus side we've had good crops of Snow peas, onions, raddish, beetroots and now the strawberries and broad beans are coming on.

That was a close call Slowboat, but good to see the air pump saved the trout! How large are they?
Were they showing any signs of distress when you discovered the problem?

Yay, Spring! Close call there Slowboat. Those veggies look fantastic. How cold does it get where you are? How did the pond do over Winter?

besides the water looking very dirty the trout they seemed to ok. the big ones are nearly 400mm long.

need to harvest some soon. the last 2 harvests I didn't measure or weigh them unfortunately.

Brian we had our coldest and wettest winter for a many years this year, it rarely gets below 5° C here.

that said I did manage to get a few brussel sprouts which most experts say is impossible in Perth!

I've only did well with Brussels Sprouts and that was thirty years ago. They were out in the snow and we were still picking and eating they. I do remember some aphids... Still it was quite the sight.

I'm going to do the ol' Charlie bump.

hi Skeggley, I have been meaning to post an up date for while, things are going along well.
Very happy to say the 2016 trout survived the summer and are doing well. while most of the summer was fairly mild there was a few hot days around 40°C which had me worried especially when the temp gauge was reading 27°C ! which prompted me to get a pool thermometer which was reading some 2.5° lower. Still 25° is still warm for trout.
My second crop of corn is nearly done, and we had green beans and some broccolini before the bugs got to them.


about 20 or 30 trout left from 100 delivered Easter 2016.

this was the first batch of corn.

Nice looking corn. What is the depth of your GB, and how deep is the Hydroton in the GB?

beds are 300mm deep and media is about 275mm
