Great idea, but isn't this a little off topic for your thread? Maybe the venting thread.

Opps

I thought I WAS in venting corner.

I've been venting quite a bit of late :)

I moved it to here

I just re-read it, and it's in a different voice. I have a different voice for venting corner and here.

I need to get out more :)

Thanks dstjohn99

I've been growing a sphere of green slime in an IBC with my Golden Comets (gold goldfish)as feed for them.

It turns out goldfish dont have a stomach but instead just a mouth connected to a vent via a gut. The result is they dont get a lot out of their food as it runs straight through them apparently.

The result of that is that it tends to cost a lot to feed them. Or at least it tends to cost more than nothing. I'm a nothing kind of guy when it comes to how much I want to spend on goldfish food.

So I grow a sphere of slime.

Every now and again the slime decides to get into my SLO and block the system and make all the water fall out. I fixed it by adding a float valve that I bought from eBay for $2 or so. It didnt have a lot of flow, but I drilled it out to make it a bit better.

Anyway. Now, itf the water level gets too high, the flow slows right down. Probably not such a good idea for everyone else, but I'm running 12 adult goldfish in 1500L of water with a 500L BYAP growbed so I think I could have no flow for a few days without any problem. Especially with goldfish.

But... (and this is the "Aquaponics can do that!" point)

When I've cleared out the SLO, I take out a handful of green slime that I then (to Mrs Bullwinkle's delite) throw on the top of the IBC.

After a few days it dries and turns white.

Where it was thrown quite thin, it dries to make perfect, white (slightly interestingly textured) paper. It looks a bit like any handmade paper but without all the hand making that normally goes along with it. Just throw it at your IBC!

Aquaponics can do that!

Some time ago (perhaps 6 years or so) I'm pretty sure I was on a thread here on BYAP that related to non-aquaponics photography.

I also seem to recall saying I had taken a photo I was pretty proud of, and would post it when I could find it. I may have mentioned "fake space junk".

Anyway, I found it! [the photo that is, not the thread] :)

Does anyone know the thread I'm talking about. (mrs Bullwinkle just came in to see what I was giggling about, typing alone at 1:30 am

I'm not feeling confident about this search :)

Here is a bit of the aquaponics slime paper.

It's around 5cm wide, and the poor quality of the script is just my crap handwriting, not anything to do with the paper.

I'll try preparing some in some kind of controlled way later, but this was just peeled from the top of the IBC.

From this...

No doubt it's been done before, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it on my IBC.

It feels quite strong, and has a smooth, almost silky texture.

Yet another product you can grow in your backyard aquaponics system.

I just googled it and everything I see is about avoiding slime when making paper. I guess that means there's a chance it's an original. If so, as usual I give my discovery freely to the world to do with it as it sees fit. It turns out there is licence for just such a thing here... https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/

I wonder if paper companies will now dam rivers to make anaerobic ponds, and mulch rainforests to mix with whale blubber to fertilize their ponds to grow slime to make slime paper.

Oh well.

Sewage ponds would work instead.

It seems strange that it should dry so very white from something so very green.

I thought paper needed to be bleached with hideous chemicals.

I love the universe.

It just keeps chucking up surprise after surprise every time I sit back and give it a chance.

I bought a [discount pre-purchase thing]gift of five floats for Mrs Bullwinkle in an isolation tank so that I can use the blender to experiment a bit.

It would have been cheaper to buy another blender, but where's the fun in that? :)

This way I get some social credit, AND use kitchen appliances to secretly make a slimeshake based paper product.

Did you have some kind of alert that informed you if there were any posts on slime based products or something? :)
