well, the pump has been ordered. Settled on a Jebao 6,500 lph pump drawing 50w, which is overkill for the system as it stands but will allow for expansion down the track. It's also small enough that i can run it off an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) in the event of an all-too-common blackout here in Darwin, and will get about 36 hours run time off the UPS.

I'll look at getting a 12V aerator into the system too, giving me every chance to avoid the warm fish soup that comes with a long term blackout in the tropics :o)

If the pump is too large, put a tee and redirect the extra flow back to the sump. You can see pics of what I did on my system. Page 4 or 5 i think. I dont think you could ever have too much water movement!

Thanks mwdesign, that was one of the things i was thinking on. Have done it with my small system and the barra love chasing the bubbles around, so figure it wont hurt in this system too!

Ahhh, the joys of living in Darwin - we've had 200mm of rain in the last 24 hours. So my sump is now the QE2 and has become a den of sin for the hundred or so green tree frogs that have taken the opportunity to fornicate in it.

Yayyy! Had a week of relatively dry weather (36 degrees and 90% humidity though!!), so re-dug the sump pit and located the sump tank back in. Got it backfilled and run plumping from the pump in the sump (Sounds like a Dr Zeuss book) up to the two fish tanks to give it a test run.

Couple of minor leaks that need fixing prior to getting the system up and running properly, and noticed that my fish tanks had sunk in a little, so need to move them one at a time and put some more gravel to lift them about 25mm - wouldnt be a problem but the pipes running from the FT to the RFF are now on an angle which will cause the SLO to be wonky. Realistically, its nothing, in in reality it's likely to tweak my OCD a little!!
