Hi,

My lettuce is 2 and a half weeks on my water bed when they turned a bit yellow, on monday i sprayed iron chelate as a foliar spray cause my water bed is to big to let it go through the fish tank. Besides the iron chelate i sprayed my normal fertilizer (sea-boost) on friday. we sprayed the lettuce around 10 o clock in the morning. When i came to my plants on tuesday morning, they were all black where they were sprayed, looking like the leafs were burnt.

There can so many things be the cause of this and would like some input in regards to this. It can be my concentrate that was a bit to strong, it is very warm here at the moment, so the leafs could have burnt when the it was sprayed in the sun(although it is in a greenhouse), following friday spray it could be to close together when i sprayed the chelate on monday etc. Your input will be appreciated.

lastly, will the lettuce recover from the leaf burn, there is some of them looking very bad but some of them only the outer leafs are black and dying?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Best not to do any foliar spraying during the day - early morning or evening/night.
Heat + sun will do it.
may be that the dose was a bit high. Often best to keep foliar doses well below recommended.

what type of lettuce - if pick and eat variety then remove the leaves.
(maybe post some pictures)

I had the same issue with zucchini and a Black Russian tomato which are both recovering. I thought it was the salt but may have been the daytime watering of iron chelate.

Sounds like they were burned. A couple of other things you may want to consider - did you mix these well before doing your dilutions and did you dilute them at the same rate as you have in the past? Sometimes there can be a lot of salt in seaweed products so it could also be the problem if this one has high salt levels.

Can you please explain that a bit more thoroughly Andre?

When you say "water bed", are you referring to a floating raft bed?

Why can you not add the chelated Iron directly to the water in the system?

What is your system water pH and what form of chelated Iron do you have?

Don't spray.... mix into water and add that way littlt at a time.... Sounds like leaf burn...

Either way works but it depends on the amounts used and other things like the system pH, the type of iron chelate and the time of day if you spray. Sometimes the bottle will say what the dilution is for doing the spray method.
