Just break it apart and plant the cloves. I tend to plant them everywhere, even in other peoples flower beds.

Generally the time to plant is April and harvest around October. (Perth climate)
Having said that there is often no right or wrong way in an ap system.

Duff-- or anyone that does it; what recipe do you use to pickle garlic?
I've had it minced in olive oil... I've had it 'minced and roasted... in olive oil. But I have never seen pickled garlic.
Mind you-- I adore pickles... corn, okra, cucumber, tomato... but never saw garlic pickled.

Since I also love garlic, I would be delighted to try a new method!
We call it 'Italian penicillin. It keeps me healthy!

I've heard mention of companion planting a couple of times... and y'all are right about the beans and peas...
Out in the southwest (U.S.) Beans and squash are planted around corn... the beans use the stalk to climb, the squash grows out around the foot and looks like a 'skirt'... and plant ten to fifteen corn plants per 3'hill-- not on top of each other... in about a foot radius...

I'm leaning toward TC's concept of the towers for some things that would vine, besides the strawberries. But in the beds-- the use of garlic to suppress aphids is easy peasy.
I thank you for the concept of lowering the flood level to permit bulb integrity.

I'm just getting my parts together to try my first 'air pump' lift system... still just a fish tank... no plants.

I tried growing some last year I planted them and only got really small heads maybe 2 cloves
Will plant the lot again this year and hope it gets bigger.
It apparently doesnt like it real sub tropical even though I got a sub tropical variety supposedly.

Surely every meal in thailand and vietnam has garlic in it they must have tropical varieties.
Why dont we ?

Yes, Houston, plant in Oct. harvest June/July, 60 sets this year. Also 60 red onions, same timeline.

Thailand and Vietnam have mountainous regions where the climate is not tropical.

I suspect this is where they grow plants that need chilling.

We in Croatia are improting mist of garlic (90% even), and all of finest, tastyest grows at seaside. Improted is Chinessegarlic wich is jakkk. So i belive a garlic in ap is very reasnoble thing to plant. Now. How much garlic cloves is posible oer 1sqm? Does some did the maths? People usually plant garlic between other cultures so i belive if i plant just garlic cloves i can get plant them very much. And as garlic ha 1:6 ratio on 100kg planted incom is 600kg and more. Here i am also thinking that over my grow beds are UV lights for 24h growing process

Hi Valodja. You could plant as close as 15cm apart, provided the soil is good. Garlic likes sunny, reasonably dry places in the garden. At 15cm (staggered) you would get about 40 per square meter. (I normally grow 400 plants each year to allow for plenty of cloves to grow next year, some to give away to friends/family and my own use.
I grow both soft and hard stem varieties, though I think soft stem garlic generally tastes better. Hard stems tend to grow better in more tropical areas (but being in melbourne you have to be prepared for everything).
Once the stems have fully grown, I cut off the top 60mm as this forces the plant to make bigger bulbs.
BTW, well done to Croatia on reaching the World Cup grand final.

I did also do them via Aeroponics inside PVC GrowTowers before I did Aquaponics

( trick was to have the bulb shielded from sun and just have an opening for the leaves to shoot through )

getting around 100 / m2 with garlic 1800 pots per 6x3m grow zone ( including foot path )
I was getting 3x that when vertically growing but too much hard work involved
getting too old to push my back that hard now
yields were over 100g each always use your largest to replant smallest to friends and sell the mediums
