has anyone used raw polyethylene beads for a biological filtering medium

Been a fair bit of discussion on it but the only one I can actually remember doing it was Frank. There is a paper on it and it is very efficient as both a mechanical and biological filter (I will try and find it and post the link).
For BYAP the only downside is ensuring the beads are contained within the filter as they are fairly small and it does need regular 'backflushing'.

Also search for polygeyser filters I think they use HDPE beads.
