Yea, they are a food grade plastic Mc :rr:

We got these from the sewage treatment folks... The fire brigrade used to use blue barrels for their high density low expansion foam before going over to IBC's... perhaps other members can suggest other places that might sell/use them...

geez am, you would wanna give them a really good clean out. Nova lost all the fish he had due to surfactants in the water from a fire engine tanker. I am assuming that those fire retarding foams contain surfactants too....

You do need to scrub them real well - I have lost no fish as of yet and we have 45 barra in the one from the airport guys, and the other is my water aging tank...

Decided to use the student's system to run and experiment or 2...
I got the first bed set up as an auto siphoning bed with a continuous flow pump...
In the bed I have filled it with rived washed stone half way up, then filled one half the rest of the way with fine stone, and the rest with more river washed stones... (refer to pics)
I have planted the entire side with the river washed stones with shallots (taken from the stainless steel gutter, which has been done away with).
I have planted the other side filled with finer stone with a very young tomato seedling, and basil seedlings...
Now, the experimental side of things:
I have planted equal amounts of tomato, lettuce, rocket, nasturtium, cucumber and broccoli seeds into both halves of the bed...... and sprinkled equal amounts of the seed over the surface of each side of the bed with the same seeds... What I want to see is not only how many of each seed germinate, but what are the survival rates too.

if you mean experiment with different planting media etc then I agree Rup.... I know that established seedlings from places like 'B' survive in the bigger stones, I want to see just how well seeds do too :)

I thought I would post a pic of the auto siphon I installed too - made from 'throw away junk - a section of garden hose and a length of old dwc from a demolished building... works a treat! :)

LOL- normally I would leave it to them... BUT they are running a little short of time at the moment and I am hoping that they will think up some more experiments after seeing what I started...
and they will be continuing with the experiment I started - I start it, THEY have to finish it

FINALLY!!! :)
The pump for the students arrived today! We have been using my pumps to keep things running thus far... once this pumps is properly plumbed in it will free up 3 other pumps for me to use elsewhere :)
now to get into plumbing it all up
