You need a shave ya scruffy bugger.. Yeah, fish up there are just too easy to catch...

So I managed to catch a Aus salmon last night.
I haven't seen one of these since leaving the South coast of WA decades ago. I think the cold weather this year has allowed these southern spices to migrate further north this year.


Not known for there eating quality's I filleted it & smoked the fillets all the rest will go into food for the AP.

I try to keep all the wild caught fish frames/heads/wings until there is enough to make into a big brew of stock then use this for the protein in AP food. Pulling all the big bones out that will not go trough the meat grinder adding blended veg & other natural additives.
Push it all through a meat grinder them this can be dried or frozen to be fed to the fish.

Good catch GK and nice sized fish. I really like Aus salmon as a fish and have no issue eating fillets and cutlets. I think the bad rap they often have is not deserved. Glad to see all the frames going to good use too. Should be more of it

Yes, nice size fish and great use of everything...

My favourite use of salmon was making patties, damn they were good, though I've eaten them just about every way possible, as you do when you've lived on the south coast..

[EDIT - Charlie,] My maths sucks, but isn't that a really shitty beer to fish ratio by weight?

1kg of fishmeat/L of beer means you stay afloat as long as you are pissing over the side.

Are there any problems with feeding fishmeal to your fish? Like mad cow disease kinds of things?

I know that doesn't sound like I'm being serious, but I actually am.

It's never occurred to me that I could do this.

I'm trying to raise $200 goldfish, but they have silly guts that need too much food unlike native Australian species, but leftovers from a plate of fish might just be the answer I've been looking for.

I wouldn't feed the leftover fish of the same spices to each other & I always cook the fish first before making the DIY feed just to be sure to kill any possible disease/pathogens.

I would be concerned over using imported fish and prawn products. Antibiotics can be an issue and I would be worried about some disease especially with prawns from SE Asia.

I used to use the raw prawns shells as Burly when fishing...... I know better now of the risks to the wild stocks. The sardine viruses that nearly wiped out Southern Australian fisheries were thought to have come from imported baitfish or fish feed on tuna farms.

Cooking should destroy disease but not all antibiotics.

I never thought to break it down like that Bull but I agree, Ill lift my game next trip lol
