In addition to what Charlie said, I've noticed I get a better start from the wicking beds in Spring (they accumulate heat faster) than I do from the AP system. In the fall the AP system tends to hold on longer than the wicking beds so they compliment each other.

Good point Scotty. How does growth compare between the two methods out of interest?

I apologize for not being clear. I appreciate your answers but I think you missed my point entirely. I don't disagree with any of your answers but those aren't the questions I am asking.

I've seen people grow root vegetables in growbeds. Mostly they appear healthy but they have no form. Why is that? I had always assumed it was for two reasons. 1.)They don't like being constantly flooded and 2.)They don't like a loose airy media. I'm assuming again but I thought it was the compactness of the soil that gave them their form.

We all agree that compost is great for wicking beds and these type beds always utilize it. Imagine for a moment though that it is not an option for you. Why couldn't you just use an inert soil media that will be dense enough to give root vegetables their form ?
