Given that it's a small system and would have an RFF to remove the bulk of the solids, using the shadecloth mostly for biofiltration, would it really need cleaning that often? :dontknow:

I have my 60L drums out in the car awaiting to be turned into something, what if i made one drum into a RFF and i had a dry trickle drum filter above it?

I'm thinking the polishing wool is what mostly catches anything that gets past the RFF and being a wet filter from the bottom up the wool cannot be placed on the bottom due to changing it regularly

What do u think?

Check out Andy's thread (crappy basil growers) he uses an upflow filter filled with bottlecaps which would be both mechanical and biofilter. :)

Thanks Sleepe Great thread by dasboot i'm enjoying all the pictures :D

Do u think i could do as dasboot is doing with his filter and the funnel but place polishing wool over the top? i wont mind changing the wool every 2-3 days its cheap in bulk, that should stop the main filter media clog with waste?

Personally I'd go the RFF then the upflow bottle cap filter (shitloads easier to clean than shadecloth). The only problem with the filters is when they go anaerobic but having a bit of crap in there is not a drama and probably contributes to the nutes in the water. :)

Think about halfway down here viewtopic.php?f=18&t=16235&start=1515

So its take Mel's drawings and change the second blue barrel to Andy's upflow filter. :)

Do those bottle caps tumble like the K1 media or are they stationary?

they would likely be stationary if the flow is flow - it takes alot of flow to move them in 200l barrel.
they would move with a large air pump attached.

So far i haven't found a supplier for the caps yet they are far to costly, 10c each and u have to buy a carton 2500 minimum cheaper to buy K1's

After all the searching and searching plus researching its getting really tiring, i'm thinking about just buying this and being done with the filter http://www.creativepumps.com.au/zpumps/ ... rapure.htm by the time i fill my 60L tub i would have spent just as much

and the above linked filter according to this page http://www.creativepumps.com.au/zpumps/ ... rapure.htm worse case scenario will do 500 litres

Silly me; I had forgotten the East coast of OZ does not have recycling centers. :)

If I had to spend $50 on the RFF and the upflow filter (with media) I would be really pissed off.
