man each to their own.

i'm cool for people to say it doesn't bother them, hell, i smoke! but "its all good 'cause it never hurt me" can't be used as proof supreme.

I think thats what EB was trying to say with the lead, i'm sure that got the same sort of responses back in the day. Not that i'm saying gal is as bad as lead.

my point is that gal pipes usually have drinking water in them, and drinking water is usually neutral or alkaline (esp if part of the water distribution grid is from cement pipes)

I think its good that there is discussion, as ultimatly the person who asked the question (can't even remember now) has enough info to make a choice.

True... but I would like to give my kids a fighting chance... I am r100% responsible for them until they decide on a diet of their own one day...
But yes, a person could go overboard rather easily :)

It's quit interesting doing a search on zinc toxicity...

Heres one about the problems of using galv kitchen tops in rural Australia.

now that was a GOOD READ!, thanks!

see what i mean about variables? galv coating can contain between 1% and 20% zinc.

just out of curiosity EB what actually is aquaplate and how long would it last in an environment with say fish being semi abrasive and possibly slowly wearing away the aquaplate and exposing the zincalume?

I think from what I've read about zinc up to now that it will kill off fish before hummans have problems.

Thanks for the discussion and links!

NJH, thanks for the info; I am considering a plate style exchanger now too because I think it would be easier/sturdier to set up.

I just found the following information in my huge pile of literature from when I studied Aquaculture.
Zinc: Acceptable levels for fish culture <0.005ppm
Levels in water where fish kills have occured >0.5ppm
How you measure it I wouldnt have a clue!!

"Galvanised metal tanks should not be used for aquaculture purposes unless they are coated or lined. Zinc leaches from the galvanised coating and can cause heavy metal poisoning."
Salmonids generally the most succeptible fish.

It's a polymer lining bonded to the inside of the corro.. I have no idea how long it will last, but I imagine that even if a fish does scratch it, at least it's ony a few small spots where the water can ingress..

For the tank side of things, personally I would go for food grade HDPE anyway nowadays.. My first corro system is starting to rust in a couple of places now..... :?
