mrjohnpink,

If you don't have any luck searching for "wood vinegar", search for its more formal name: Pyroligneous Acid.

Here are a couple of places in the UK that have it:

http://www.scientificlabs.co.uk/product/W296708-5KG
http://www.leancare.co.uk/

This guy (Charles Dowding) in the UK talks about using Wood Vinegar to control aphids, maybe he can share a clue:

http://www.charlesdowding.co.uk/contact/

Hopefully you can find it at some agro-place rather than a lab supply place...

Good luck!

Why not add wicker pots to the W D T system ,have used guttering to wicker plants on the balcony small water valve from water tank to regulate water ,better than the two bucket system ,.When in June will plant out tomatoes cucumbers . ,used roofing material to stop evaporation of water .I don't see why could not be used on aquaponics system.

Hiya Mr John, looking good, interesting to see how the buckets go.
What are your thoughts as to why the fish died?

Hi The trough system lives on the balcony just connected to the water barrel ,but I am going to try wickering system in the aquaponic D W T system when- growing lettuce I am finding the water is too warm making the plants bolt using the wickering system would enable me to avoid that? .The fish died when I was on holiday in N Z when that happened they looked well fed water seemed ,tomato plants had died one of the grow beds had clogged ,there was one fish that survived -but found him to be sluggish for the the first week ten days later he was quite normal .I took a sample to the fishery centre water OK ,bought fingerlings ,some have died from fin rot ,not a very good batch .The holdall I made a small aquaponic grow bed as pictured ideas on building a small system -the holdall costs about seven pounds , The wood I bought I had cut on the premises saves time Cheers
