Moving the grow bed into the sun made all the difference in the world. Everything is really growing and I am finally feeling good about the system and thinking of adding two more grow beds. Everything is a nice dark green color and there is hourly growth.

As a side note, I am working with a local drug and alcohol rehab center to build an AP system fro therapy and to provide with them with some food. I will start a new thread for that one when It gets going.

Well I am finally back. I see I haven't posted since May 8 and truly a lot has been happening. My sytem has definitely matured and has given me lots of pleasure.

A couple of weeks ago we had company...(family) and I promised we would eat fish. Well I took out 15 and the total cleaned weight was 13 lbs. I never dreamed it would be so hard to eat my fish! It was kind of like eating the family dog. We have been through a lot together as we have gotten into this venture. I suppose it will get easier. I have about 250 lbs of fish in the tank right now so I will have to strt eating them in a serious way pretty soon. Most average about 600-700 grams, little over a pound each. I am feeding about 700 grams of food a day plus veggie scraps.

I have made some changes on the return line from the GB in the sun. I am using square PVC down spouts for NFT trays with 2" net pots I bought in the US on a recent trip. That is working far better than using the sponges to hold the plants in place.

I will try to post pics in the next couple of days.

Sorry for all the rambling. Its just that 7932 posts is a lot of posts to go through in one evening.

Hi DT, Welcome back!!

If your cleaned weight was therefore 13/15 of a pound per fish (average), then your live weight is going to be about 1.75 pounds per fish. I think tilapia clean to about half their live weight.

We soooo need pictures!!

I know what you're talking about. Things got _really_ busy at work, and I hadn't checked on the forum in 2-3 weeks, MAN, thousands of posts, and then when I went to a meeting, the login timed out, and it only had 15-30 posts. Now I just need to catch up on all that I missed....

Janet,
I don't think the cleaned weight of tilapia is 50% the way we do it here. We simply scale and gut. Everything else goes in the skillet. I don't have a good enough knife to fillet fish without wasting lots of good meat.

I will try to get one out so I can get some pics but they are understandably wary of the net at the moment.

I don't blame them.... do you hang the skillet above the fish tank hawk??

I think the best way to eat a fish is whole, a bit of seasoning and herbs stuffed inside, wrapped in foil or straight on the BBQ. The meat just falls of the bones.

Either that or smoked.
