Joblow, I haven't changed my biofilter drum configuration, just the drum contents.

The need for a ladder hasn't changed, either.

Thank you for identifying my media things, Retired2Rancher.

Thank you for the pall ring link, SolTun.

Thank you for your kind words, Boss. (I think you deserve a capital B).

Let's see - we have an American providing the name of a product whose manufacturer is identified by a Norwegian supplying a link to a UK firm for a media thing ...er ring being used in aquaponics in the wilds of Western Australia.

This is a truly cosmopolitan and omniscient forum. Gotta be happy with that! :)

hehe, when it comes to oil exploration we're, putting it mildly, pirates, so it stands to reason someone here knows every detail of the industry. I use KOH in making biodiesel, only person who ever said the knew what it was, said they used it in oil fields as a cleaner of pipes I think it was. :D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_hydroxide

PLJ,

Thanks for the reply and photo, I thought by the physical size of your "bio-media things" the Pall Ring media would need too be in very large containers, and with the size of your fish tank I had imagined that your bio filtration setup would be a far bigger than it actually is.

P.S. I'd always thought the ladder was a permanent fixture :D

Hey Jo, the bio filter sizing is dependent on the number of fish it has to service not the size of the tank.

Joblow, I'm sure the pall rings I have were designed for a much larger biofilter receptacle than 205L drums but they were given to me so I decided to give them a go.

As far as know these pall rings were originally used in a very large recirculating aquaculture system south of Perth. It went fins up, like so many do.

Not at all, boss.

Things are well, thank you thjakits! I'll soon be commencing the process of preparing my tank and grow beds for my next batch of rainbow trout. I presently have some large silver perch in the tank just to keep the system ticking over.
The average size of my trout at harvest last season was greater than previous years, with several fish attaining a weight of more than 750g - not massive but pleasing enough. I'm expecting better results this season.

Great to see you around PJ. :wave1:

How many trout you planning on stocking this year?

Martin.

G'day, Martin! I've had 300 trout each season for the last three years but think I'll go up to 350 or even 400 this year. I've made a few improvements to the system, and reckon I'm smarter now and up to the challenge.

Time will soon tell.
