ahh i cant be bothered reading all those replies :(
but to clarify some things i have seen:

mussels wont help stringy algae, pea soup algae maybe.
UV clarifiers only work for pea soup algae, not stringy algae.
do not add more aquatic plants, they will steal nutrients from your terrestrial plants, they are better at soaking up nutes than terrestrial plants.

a cover will help, but dont be fooled into thinking that is a be all and end all like people here make out, i find that algae grows the fastest in my ponds in winter rather than summer.

DLF's advice is pretty much spot on.

Mussels and UV lights only work while it is at the microscopic level, not pasta.

Algae needs light to photosynthesize. No light, it should stop growing. This is almost impossible to do.

And of course you have more algae in the winter. Cold water holds more DO then warm water does. :dontknow:

not really "of course" because the pond is then in shade 90% of the time, rather than in sun 90% of the time... since sun is more important than DO (considering algae makes oxygen, more than they use and like other water plants, would only reabsorb O2 at night), i think it shows slightly lower light levels may assist the algae - like it does with duckweed.
Also the pond temperature doesnt change enough to impact DO levels.

a UVC will NOT stop stringy algae.... i have run UVC for years on various ponds.... they have NEVER stopped stringy algae...

Are you telling me that your winter water temp is the same or similar to summer temp on a outside pond (non heated) ? I live almost in the tropics and our water swings 25C

BTW, I did write "Mussels and UV lights only work while it is at the microscopic level, not pasta."
Hum, Ever since I bought my inline UV light, I have never had algae bother my tank. Neither do the thousands of outside Koi ponds here. I don't know how large your pond(s) are but if they are huge like 50,000 gallons and up, they would need a lot of UV to handle it. It would be very costly. most likely needing many stations.

With the really huge fish farms here, they never pump agitate the water. they make DIY thrasher machines that beat or thrash the water and toss it around all day. Pumping costs too much. The ponds are so big that they have to take a row boat out to feed all the fish.

the water in my pond swings roughly 8c or so from summer to winter.

well i tell you what, my system has roughly 30 full sized goldfish in about 4000L which get fed regularly, i have no filter except my scoria biofilter, i have no UV, i have no plants, i do no water changes, i have absolutely no pea soup or stringy algae in any of my system..... UVC does not help and is almost alway uneccessay (only neccessary in pea soup if you are very impatient)

my ponds i have built arent huge, usually backyard scale, the one in my yard right now is only about 2500L.

30 GF in 4000L is a light bio mass load. UV seems to be a matter of opinion. For myself I like it because it can kill off many problems. It is not just to take out algae. How do you get away with out any water changes? Does your Biofilter take everything out?
