I would like to set up my system to run off solar panels, at 40 watts per pump it would seem easy, no? I of course understand I will need batteries for night time and such, also I will have backup.

Are there any examples?

Thanks again, sorry to ask so many questions, trying to learn :?

I have 2 entire systems powered by the sun, along with my house. Your PV panels will need to be rated significantly higher than your pump ratings, due to inefficient Lead-acid battery charging, and cloudy weather, nights etc.

you power your home with solar panels? How many watts total? I heat my home with an outdoor wood burner and want to run it with solar, we very rarely lose power but I hate electric bills. I did find a couple solar powered aquaponics video's on youtube. looks simple enough.

Where is NSW?

Indirectly we are.
We have 5.7kW of solar panels on the roof which powers the whole house.
Last year we had one bill of $63 (AUD) for electricity.

NSW is in Australia. Currently running 5.7kW of tracked PV, but will be adding more panels soon. I don't have electricity bills, since I am off-grid, with 21kWh of LiFePO4 battery.

Have you guys heard of earthships? Its a way of building houses from recycled stuff. Anyway there off grid and theres lots of info on solar if you look them up. But be carefull, you may end up wanting one! They even have indoor AP in some that use sunlight. They could help anyone looking into solar. My house is sorta inspired by them but sadly I Im not off grid. Yet. Hope that helps..

Earthships, yes I have heard of them, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to live inside a toxic pile of old tyres! I have built myself a small adobe building though- all natural clay and wiregrass to hold it together, with no toxic synthetic rubber solvents etc.
