I've been searching the net trying to find info on this breeder colony. Can't really find any info with people posting any info far as personal experience with this type of fish. There's a guy out of FL that's selling a colony for $400 plus shipping.
Do any having any info or experience with this type of breeds?
I like the whole idea of having a 99% all male off spring, but is it worth that money buying this colony ?

You'll have to consider what you intend to have them for :dontknow:

I suppose you could sell the offspring but I'm not sure what they go for. That also makes it difficult to place a value on a breeding colony since we don't know this or how many are in the colony.

I'd definitely make certain they are legal in your state before shelling out any money.

Yes they are completely legal. And it's one Hornorum male and 5 orange Mossambicas

My plans are to have, all tilapia breeds, red, white, blue, Nile, Mozambique and gold. And use this colony for people that just want all males.
If keeping all thoses becomes a problem I would then just mainly have the all males in stock.

Keeping in mind that I'm not a Tilapia grower, based on a quick Internet survey, here are some possible sources (looks like you may be looking at buying from the second one).

http://www.miami-aquaculture.com/tilapia.htm
https://lakewaytilapia.com/Live_Tilapia_For_Sale.php
http://www.tilapiafarmingathome.com/Pages/OurProducts.aspx

I can't vouch for any of these so it's use at your own risk. I know there are probably other growers out there as well and some of them might be members here so with a bit of luck they will pitch in their two cents worth.

Just a thought but you might also search under Hawaiian gold Tilapia (assuming this has any interest for you and it might not) since this is Oreochromis mosambicus as well :dontknow:

The golds are nice. Just thought that that colony was the best type of hybrids since you they are 99% all male and they grow bigger faster.

I think it's the Hornorum/Mossambica cross that's responsible for the all or almost all males result. So any of the three links given last time should yield about the same percentage of males since they are all that cross. Of course you'll get different colors. I doubt the trait for sex of offspring is linked to the color of the fish but I suppose it's possible and I certainly don't know. It's tough to tell the hype from what's really true with stuff like this.

..
Pennyfish would be a great fish to grow..
600gm in 110 days.. I would be happy with that.. :-)

PS... anyone know if tillapia are allowed in Sydney Australia.. They would need heating (solar) almost all the year, so I guess there is little environmental reason to prohibit their cultivation
....

Hi BuiDoi

I'd love to try Tilapia if I could, so have followed relevant posts with interest.... iirc you asked about Tilapia in Sydney a couple of times last year. My understanding and advice of others including Charlie was that they are illegal all over NSW.

Just wondering if you have some new info to suggest things might have changed?

No nothing new.. and.again I suspect there is no concern as escapes would likely die at winter water temperatures ..

The only other concern is the growth rates, and if it is worth the trouble..
