Hookup is easy. The code for the display is quite a bit more involved though.
I bet. Chiumanfu you are an inspiration. Thank you. Do you have any PCBs left to sell? I'm ready I think, Brian

So.. over in Adelaide (South Australia) last night was the hottest on record since 1897. Guess when my pump decided to pack it in after running reliably for yonks. Murphy is such a dick.

I finally discovered it late morning, by then most of my plants were looking pretty crispy, I have the GB on slow drain, so it was bone dry for quite some time I'd say. The silver lining I guess was that I had harvested the last of my rainbow trout a couple of days earlier due to the heat wave arriving.

Motivation comes in the most annoying forms

Here is the Arduino sketch. Bear in mind that this is my first Arduino project though I used to be an embedded device programmer so it's not my first rodeo. I used to code exclusively in AVR ASM and I think that style is reflected in my code (most obviously in my lack of the use of functions). I've included all library's required in the zip file. Also, this is work in progress so there is bound to be many changes to come. A lot of the code comes from various examples around the net so license is open. If you make millions of dollars off of my code, please buy me dinner.

Hi Chiumanfu,

Can you please make the code zip available again?
The link provided in your first post is no longer working.
If you could edit the first post and update this, that would be great.

Thanks.

This is an awesome thread.
It seems to me that using something like SourceForge would be great to keep track of the code, or perhaps even github, which would provide code revision control.

For some reason, the mods can't allow me to edit the first post. Latest code link is here
viewtopic.php?p=524563#p524563

I'll have some time to put it on github during the xmas break.

Have you looked at the cooking hacks pages?
They have a set of libraries that may help, collaboration can save a lot of cycles.

Forum
https://www.cooking-hacks.com/forum/ind ... 916c1b4eb3

Tutorials
https://www.cooking-hacks.com/documenta ... g-arduino/

https://www.cooking-hacks.com/documenta ... onitoring/

They sell the pre-built modules, and provide access to the libraries for free.
It may be worth while looking at what they have and building on it, to expand the community in put.

Thanks

Does anyone in AU have the list of components from jaycar or ebay or equivalent? Great project.

On the wifi front, are the xbee's no good?

Depending on your level of budget and electronics skill, this may be a good starter platform for you;

https://www.cooking-hacks.com/documenta ... g-arduino/

https://www.cooking-hacks.com/documenta ... onitoring/

It is possible to integrate the work done here with the above listed platform, it is just software. This is the path I have taken, I didn't find this thread until after I had placed my order for the cooking hacks components I wanted. Even though I have a background in electronics (not used for many years), I am time poor, so I choose this path to reduce my effort somewhat.

This is a good implementation of the cooking hacks solution;
http://www.instructables.com/id/Simple- ... dware-Sta/

Anyway, I am looking to integrate some of the work done by chiumanfu to expand my platforms capabilities.
I must say I do like the clean electronics boards created by cooking hacks, but it can be done much cheaper following chiumanfu excelent work in this thread. You can easilyt search for the parts in ebay, but I do not think they are always the cheapest. In AU there are a few good robotics stores that sell the control boards (Arduino etc), but the probes are more easily found on ebay, unless you're will to do a lot of searching.

I am in AU. :)

Research is the key.

The problem with XBee is you still need some sort of gateway to get out onto the internet. I use powerline ethernet and it has worked flawless.

Found an ammonia monitor that doesn't cost an arm and a leg:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XNZRKQ6?psc=1

monitors Temperature, Free Ammonia, pH, water level, Total Light

Don't know if it meets your specs or expectations, but it might be something to look at.

The Seneye slides only last 3 months and cost $30+. Little too pricey for my liking.
