A few more pictures from the wicking barrels and wicking beds.

I have planted a few "rare" fruits this weekend. Mainly tropical. These are not "air prunning as they wont be making large taproots. I will be keeping the water level in the water reservoir high for the Taro.








Unfortunately the nectarines seems to be dying. They were in a really poor state in the aquaponics (due to the leave curl) and i hoped that the transplant to the APWB will save them. Unfortunately they seem to be dying. The Peach tree did survive and is doing well in the air pruning wicking barrel.

Unfortunately the two nectarines are now dead - they didn't survive the aquaponics to wicking barrel transfer. I used one of the barrels to plant some tamarillo's and the other to plant a pepino (taken from a cutting). I also added a an Arrow root (Canna Edulis) - keen to see how this turns out~

I remember a while ago somebody saying wicking beds was not a good idea

I cleaned out one of the wicking beds today (the first i build). Had a large haul of carrots. I kept the Aloe vera in the bed.


Planted some tomatoes, watermelon, pumpkin and corn and mulched with 2" layer of cheep poo.

This is the same wicking bed that with the picture that I posted on 24th of October. Amazing what 45 days can do in a wicking bed!

Holy mackerel! I've got to try a couple wicking beds this Spring. Is there any noticeable down side? Excessive water usage or something? Man that's great

The only down side i can think of is that it is somewhat more expensive to build than a raised bed. Water use is significantly less than a raised bed.

-Potatoes

- pumpkin (also planted last week)




And a tomatillo that is starting to set fruit

Thanks for the reply Gabe. Is this your first season for the wicking beds? You build them over Winter correct? Are they all tied to fish tanks?
