Rainbow fish are not exactly eating fish, but they are native and are being bred in tanks but not sure if hormones are involved http://www.prfma.com.au/native-fish-breeding-project
Volunteers are also breeding sooty grunter in Qld using injections of hormone manipulator http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-02-03/m ... er/6063580

What is the correct name of the hormone used in Jade pearch?
And can it be sourced by us amateurs?
I wonder if removing the fish from a shallow tank and dumping them into a larger deeper tank plus the influx of garden water would do the trick.

human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)

No

Nope.

Even if you able to obtain HCG, the hormone injection to induce spawning isn't the hard part, Its raising the eggs to fry. Not something achievable without the right training and equipment.

My brother, a qualified fisho, says that the uni used to get the students to breed and raise Silvers, as they were one of the most robust fish to grow. The students did all sorts of experiments on different feed, feed rates.. to try and get the greatest return on the fish. In saying that he buys his fish as juveniles for his system, as he doesn't have the resources to manage the fry.

looks like it's around $100 per 5000IU/vial of HCG

at a rate of 200+ iu/kg of fish that's at least a good dozen fish and 1 million eggs ...

wonder if ovaprim works on perch ?

Look what I found today in my main tank that has approx 12-15 2Kg+ adults.
this is the smaller of the two I could see
The other one looks more like a streamlined fish rather than a fat front end.

Its swimming about 2 inches under the surface and the pipe in the top third of the pic is the bottom siphon tube.
I wonder how many were eaten or even hatched.
How many eggs were distributed over the grow beds.

Well done Savarin, that's amazing, everything I have read say's they won't breed "in captivity". They must be happy in your system so credit to you.

Did you ever grow these fingerlings to see exactly what they were?

Umm, it is probably illegal I'd say.

Or can hobbyists get this prescribed by a vet?
Keen to find out, might give it a go myself. Would be cute to raise some young ones from scratch! Plus it would reduce the risk of picking up nasty diseases from fish farms...

Fascinating thread. Nice to see the old timers writing. A lot of history here on Backyardaquaponics.
