not saturated - that is the big issue with many small wicking beds and self watering systems, plants get too wet.
[I am guilty of this and regularly have to drain and leave to dry out a bit]

I gather you have the small shallow pots as discussed previously.
If you use the shade cloth method then dig down and make sure the soil is damp but not wet.
else you just get root rot and this diminishes root nutrient uptake due to the loss of fine hair roots.

top can be quite dry or just add a mulch.

biggest issue with small pot systems is that they dry and wet a bit too quickly.


p.s. a soil moisture meter may help. I am thinking of getting one for similar reasons.

Scotty, I recall seeing a great video on how to build a wicking bed using milk crates to create more water space as you describe, but after searching for a while, I cannot find it. Would you happen to have a link to a good one?
