I'm new to aquaponics. I have wanted to do this for sometime now and was waiting on a green house that I now have. I'm very excited to get started and hopefully by December everything will be up and going. That would be erecting the green house, digging and lining the fish pond and getting all the grow beds started. My end goal is to cut my grocery bill and be that guy that has enough to share with my friends neighbors and those that need the help with a good source of vegetables. And who knows, maybe make a little money to boot at the farmers market or local restaurants.

It's a hoop house 45'x20'. But I am more than likely gonna stretch it out a little longer. The idea is to do a 4'x4'x15' pond in ground. I am planning on putting it by the wall and placing grow beds over the top to maximize the area. they're still many questions I'm faced with though. I know that there will be almost 1800gal of water if filled to the top. I'm starting to think this is overkill, but I am wanting to have plenty of fish. That takes me to the next issue of will I have enough grow bed area to adequately filter the water. This is where I get concerned by not knowing exactly how much bed space I need to do the job. See that's the issue with this down south. No one does things like this and there's no one to chat about different options or ideas. They all grow peanuts or cotton LOL. So with that, if anyone has some solid numbers to help out it would be most appreciated.

The water quantity will only make it less likely for fish to die suddenly. Your growbed- ratio is more concerned about how many fish (and how big and how much the fish will be fed) will be in the water, you can have a 100 gallon tank with 1 two inch goldfish, and increasing the tank size to 1000 gallons or decreasing to 10, isn't going to make as big of a difference as you'd think.

There are some other recommendations floating around but basically, if you want lots of fish, you'll need lots of grow bed filtration or you'll have to add some other filtration (like Radial Flow Filters and bio-filters) to be able to raise your fish loads.

I'm from Dothan too. I'm a bit behind you. I'm looking for a greenhouse, but I bought my first IBC today. Looking forward to growing my own vegetables.

rwiethop, where did you get your IBC? The ones I have were used for field ration and have been a pain to clean.
