Hi Hezzy
I have been keeping yabbies in my sump with marron for nearly 3 years now, as already said plenty of hides and you will find the mixed genders will fight more especialy coming up to breeding i have found the best ratio is 1 male to 4 female but i keep males and females seperate for most of the time and a gravel floor is better on the shells of the yabbies and when they moult its best to leave the shells in the tank and let them clean them up.

I like the idea of gravel floors, but I find it hard enough even getting in there to attempt catching them ..
I would like to do so, so I can separate them to same sex sumps..

Again... just a small value added thing with AP and not very serious..
I'de love to get some marron.. wonder is they are sold FRESH at the markets in Sydney.. "... don't mind me going through the marron, I am.after.a female. "
..

So, as an American with different slang and such, marron, yabbies, gilgies... These are all freshwater lobsters, right? Crayfish, crawdads, etc?

Awesome! Well for reference, because of the invasive nature of crawdads, in most us states you don't need tags or a license to catch them, and you can keep 100 a day, which to put in perspective, clams require a license and you can only keep fourteen.

I recommend you check-in your local regulations before attempting anything, but as aquaponics fish go, freshwater lobsters are gonna be some of the cheapest available, IMHO.

You don't need a licence to catch yabbies, gilgies or koonacs in Oz but Marron have extremely strict laws around them and can only be caught from 8th Jan to the 5th of Feb if you purchase a marron licence. Yabbies are considered invasive here and in most parts of Oz if you catch them you can't return them to the water, much like carp. Theres also laws on types of nets you can use.

We're allowed to use traps here, you just can't leave them unattended for more that 24 hours, but a couple five gallon buckets and some hardware cloth will catch you something easily enough. I've also heard that a lot of the crays have worms in them and to avoid eating them, so if you're planning on using them, make sure you figure out a treatment for them, and maybe start a small quarantine tank.

The only one we really have here that's invasive, so far as I know, is the rusty cray, and it's pushing out native crays all over the country.

Marron are our biggest freshwater species locally. There usually very healthy but I'll check them,
Yabbies are coming from private dams and are in the dams for eating an breeding.
Yabbies get quiete big when kept right but the dams are full of small ones due to large numbers of them

>> Yabbies get quiete big when kept right but the dams are full of small ones due to large numbers of them

biggest problem for Marron vs Yabbies is that marron take a long time to get to good eating size and breeding size,
whereas Yabbies breed easily and populate quickly, but at end of day need 5-10/person of them for a basic feed.
(basically large prawn size).

The killer for AP yabbies is that you need to have 50-100 just to have an occasional feed.

In aquaculture it is only really the high market price that makes Marron so attractive.
And hence yabbies are only viable from farm dams etc where high populations are possible.

Biggest issue for Marron is sourcing them (legally at least which particularly applies to females), particularly within the SW resricted zone. Whereas Yabbies are a dime a dozen (well $1 each anyway) and legally free if you catch them.

In the US, you can usually find them at Asian markets and In seafood specific stores, not your big box seafood deli, but the smaller shops. Most places that advertise live crabs and lobster will have em, usually about five bucks a pound.
