I rented a gas post hole digger. It took two of us to hold it. Cost $25.00 usd to rent for the day. We moved around the area of the sump and dug about 12 holes 4" diameter. Digging out the rest of the hole was easy after that. Saved money on excessive beer also. It was well worth the $25. The beer store was on the way to the rental place.

I would put a lid of some sort on that sump, I had to because critters kept climbing in it, blocking pipes and the like. Toads, snakes ....... creating unexpected chaos. mother nature is relentless.
