hello, i have been searching this site for info on breeding bluegill. i have some allready and want to try them in a aquaponics system. i wanted to raise Tilapia , but they are not legal in my state. really im looking for any info on bluegill i can get.

MC, there isn't much information on this site about american species of fish. But anything that you find out and are willing to share, we would love to have

MC, quick google shows them to be fairly widely distributed across the states..... maybe call your local fisheries dept for info

From what I've read, bluegills are pretty prolific. Just give them water and food and enough space to turn around and they'll populate.

yep - they are EVERWHERE in South Africa...

I tried bluegill in a recirculating tank culture, 200 gallons and they did OK. They are not as hardy as Tilapia, and seem to get intolerant of high summer temps. But with more attention and better water quality management you may find them to be good for what you need.

As far as illegal goes, I am in California and also illegal prohibited, but that doesn't stop me. I keep my fish in a closed loop system and nobody is going to come knocking at your door. You can raise them as ornamentals and keep it to yourself.

im in a small town north of las vegas, about 4500' asl, so another reason for wanting bluegill, is not needing to heat the water. where can one get tilapia in california? might be worth a drive.

Sounds like Eddy made some flagrant and unwise moves, though. I can't imagine anyone bothering to go after a discrete and non-commercial system. As I recall, MF's original fish were sold to him as ornamentals from a pet store. If MF happens to eat his ornamentals, and thinks that they might be tilapia....

it does seem like the state was very willing to work with him, they did not want him selling live fish. i read it alittle better the second time.

this is where my bluegill live, its about 4000 gallons, in ground rubber lined pond.

this is my filter pond, its about 400 gallons, also a rubber lined in ground pond, only has plants and no fish. i guess i allready have a aquaponis system kinda water is pumped into this pond from the big pond at 1200 gallons an hour.

Close enough to the concept of AP for me coyote....

Yea that is a cool pond. Bluegill might do better outdoors than Tilapia.

In regards to the article on Bob....he appears to be a pretty stubborn individual if not resourceful. He sold them live, a big no-no by any definition, but the State appeared willing to work with him regardless. He has a natural hot spring that is priceless for recirculating tank culture. Too bad his stubborness overrode his common sense. He was warned, and took it too far leaving a harder uphill battle for the next guy who wants to grow crawfish or tilapia in the desert!!

If you keep Tilapia for personal use, keep it in a closed loop system, and basically use them for ornamental purposes, nobody will care.
