I was renting the house from him and he left the aquarium in the house because he couldn't be bothered moving it, I looked after it for 6 months or more till the accident...

Strange how the marine could be so different to fresh water....:?

There is heaps on the net to say that tea tree oil is no substitute for the cajeput as the cajeput has heaps more of the active ingredient than the Australian Melaleuca. I have seen nothing though to sugest that tea tree oil, in correct concentrations, would be toxic to the fish, merely that it will not have the medicinal effects of the cajeput. Have seen nothing about marine fish, though haven't looked either.

My fish haven't died, though concerningly I did see 1 post that mentionned that melafix had killed some blokes scaleless fish. Don't want to kill my 10+ year old clownies :(

Put the mealfix in the pond tonight as well. The silver perch in there look happy enough but seem to have some fungust at the top of the dorsal fins (is that the fin that runs accross the back of the fish?).

I think that is correct.

I've found with mine that the symptom you are describing usually happens after prolonged high ammonia or nitrites (or just generally shit water conditions, happens a little in my tropical tank if i really let it go, but more in the really heavily stocked tank. it weakens them to the point where they become much more suscptible to disease.

IMO check your water VB. If you can't or don't want to buy test kits thats cool, but do some water changes before and after using the melafix.

Its important to treat the cause as well as the symptoms.

Thats what i have found.

Keep us posted on their progress.

Steve :)

They were like that when I got them Steve. Are in much better conditions now than at the fish joint. I will do water change on weekend though now that I have started feeding them.

I am treating a skinned fish with saprolegnia a melafix course right now. It is fairly advanced though he'd hid from me as he got sick. Let you know how it goes. I use recommended dose but first time I used only 50% as the fish were skinned variety, they died.

This cottony fuzz can kill fish in droves. If you have the choice find another petshop they sold you a batch that very well could all die. Then they get to blame you for their shadiness - new fish guy.

Good luck.

AA - I agree that I probably will need to find a new source in future. Bruce's company looks the go. It was just convenient for me to use this other mob this time around due to me only getting a small quantity for my test system (bought about 25 fish - next time I'll be after 1 or 2 hundred I hope). Due to the location I was able to pick them up personally. Fish stocks are running out for the season - and was really keen to get some for my test system.

As it turned out I did pretty well - that is provided they live. My 11 silvers are much bigger than fingerlings (some are up to 25cm long from tail tip to mouth) and they still only charged me $1 for each of them :P . Now these fellas will get things moving in my system - though have also got me moving to get the system in a condition to cope with them.
