I'm in Bucketty, which is Lower Hunter (lowest, actually) and borders Central Coast.

Just setting up now, hoping to get some grow media in today if they have it in stock (planning to use scoria for now).

I've set two IBCs as FTs outside in the shade, +1 ~700L in a poly tunnel which i'm planning to use as a settling tank of sorts and perhaps grow warmer species aquatic life (not sure what).

All of GBs are in the poly tunnel atm, and i plan to expand on them to outside (i have only about 1200L of GB space, so can't really put too many fish in the FTs yet).

I'm hoping that i can manage temps effectively out here, right now it gets down to 1C outside overnight, and then in the summer it can regularly hit 40C. I've put the ST in a place that i will partially buried once i'm happy with the setup (i need to add another IBC ST as I think one isn't enough). I'm going to try to insulate the FTs but I don't know what with yet, burying them isn't an option. Aside from that and turning off the GBs in the poly tunnel overnight/extreme heat not sure what else i can really do?

I once lost an aquarium full of cichlids due to hot weather, but that was that 50C day a few australia days back....

Be good to hear what others are having success with in a similar climate and which species i just shouldn't attempt at certain times of the year.

Trout and Salmon in winter, Silver Perch in summer is the most popular way to go in Sydney region. As far as I know most people don't bother with Murray Cod after their first try. I'm about to get some Tandanous and will report back as to how they go.

Had trout all year round for 4 years in sydney and around 20kg of atlantic salmon swimming in my inner west sydney backyard at the moment.

thanks ben/rendang - any tips on where to buy fish stock? i was going to go with silver perch, but jade perch is i think higher in omega 3 and grows faster. myself, i like to eat trout and salmon (my fish of choice), so nice to hear those are good!

i'm at least 2-3mnth away from getting any fish i think, but i'd like to have a plan...

I think its a bit too cold for Jades this far south but there are plenty of Silver Perch farms around that will deliver fingerlings by courier (not sure about Bucketty though), I'm getting some Tandanus delivered from Narrabri Fish Farm for example. If you have a vehicle that will hold a blue barrel and rig up some airstones you might be able to arrange to pickup yourself. Salmon you can get thru BenG and myself, Trout also but you could try the Trout Farms if you want to get them yourself.

Wish I could have Salmon! I second Narrabri, they've really looked after me in the past. Be keen to hear how Tandanus go for you Rendang, I caught some in the wild (big fellas), and I think they gave each other too much grief and had issues with scrapes, bumps and bruises until I culled them a little (they are tops eating fish, much preferred for my like over silvers, jades and FW Barra). I think they would probably go better being brought up together though!

Thanks, good to know. I also heard they were good eating but I've never heard of them being raised commercially or seen them being sold anywhere, so we shall see how they go.

Hi. We are in it skirts of Sydney. Been up and running since about April. Have about 40 trout hopefully about 3 was away from harvest. May be a bit small. Got them a bit late.

Actually think it may have beenthrough beng/ rendang that I got the trout.

And I tell a lie. I didn't get fish late I think summer has hit a bit earlier than expected.

Just got some silver perch sent down from Narabri .......fish have been great so far and they were really easy to deal with....Narabri not the fish. Although they were pretty easy going to. Got some fairly good yabbies through them also.

Hi, I am from Tasmania and and would really like to see a working system. We will be in Sydney in August stayin in Manly but as long as public transport available will travel. Is any one willing to show us there work.
