sardines? She's doing us a favour this week, taking the kids for many hours :) so we can do stuff here, go and get some mushroom compost (going to grow some with AP water) and be grown-ups by ourselves for a while :D

My concern is that it appears that many people now think that it's "real"....

They adopt behaviour they see on TV into their own lives... embrace it as the "way" things are or should be..... forget/blur the line between fantasy and reality.

Think there was a thread somewhere else a long time ago about just feeding them the dumb pills instead..... LOL

And lets not forget the common denominator between US, Canadian and Australian media/TV products.......

Rupert Murdoch...... remember him... used to be an Australian....

Globalisation at it's simplest, distilled purest form....

Feed a standard "one size fits all" product to the market and convince the market that that's what they actually want/need...

Saves having to tailor products to individual markets/countries.... just tailor the market/countries to the individuals ..... turn them into a collective identity.... just like battery chooks.....LOL

No, I agree, most of our shows do suck! The worst is
1) all the reality shows
2) flashy prime time game shows
I only watch a few sitcoms but mostly the science, learning, and discovery channels.

It's a little disappointing to find out much our culture has affected your country. Australia is on the top of our list of places to see. Please don't tell me "it's like America but with kangaroo's and koala's" that would be a major buzzkill.

ETA: I checked out your links and now I know how to save the world! we gotta stop exporting American tv shows. It's no wonder why so many countries hate us.

And they will be wearing all black and write disturbing poetry.

Australia is still a brilliant place to see... avoid most of the inner cities.. and just don't talk to anyone under 20 and expect to hear anything not from the Simpsons, Futurama or Family Guy.... Great shows but our youths are too easily influenced.

Another example.... In the past few weeks there have been a newspaper article about a Year 1 boy (6 years old) who has been kicked out of his school for.... wait for it... sexually assaulting a female classmate. The parent was going to seek legal action... I mean come on. It is either the boy is exposed to too much sexual material on TV or the girl (or girl's parents) watch too much L&O: SVU...... There was another one this week, very similar incident....

But then again, I seem to remember playing childish "show me yours, I'll show you mine" type games at a very young age with the girl next door.. Are we just sensationalizing natural things.. I mean a friend come around the other week with his 4 year old, and she "sexually assaulted" my dog.. Sounds bad when you say it like that, but it was totally harmless, just an inquisative child...

EB, I think everyone did at some stage either at school or whatever... the thing is she didn't pin you for sexual abuse. I think that they should change the term to cover rubbish incidents like these. At 6 I don't think that boy could have possibly known what he was doing was wrong..... as long as these actions don't continue.

I wouldn't be surprised if he never touches a woman again.... what they did to the poor kid was a bit extreme....

Ahh gotcha Tim.... I thought with your talk of "youths are too influential", and TV shows, that you were infering the actions were instigaterd by TV, rather than the reactions...

Yes, I feel very sorry for the poor kid.. Some parents have a lot to answer for.

It is the the reaction of the school as you said that people have a hard time believing. The media has hyped it up too much and the situation was handled completely wrong. If feel sorry for the kid in the fact he has been put on the spotlight and labeled a sexual abuser...

However if you look at it from the other view point...

The reaction was extreme, so must have been the actions of the boy. There is no doubt that every kid see's too much sexual content on TV, if the allegations we're true, there must have been a trigger for his actions. That is the truly scary part... Will he do it again? Has he learn t his lesson?

Heres a link: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21523730-2,00.html
(Boy's mother's POV)

The main story is quite inconclusive in the fact that it was not proven what the boy actually did, however the facts do add up, single parent, difficult circumstances, possible abusive father.... or just the media escalating a touchy situation. The mother of the boy apparently sold the story to TT for a fair sum.... so in fact she initiated media attention in a way.

I am still on the fence with this one..... now I have read into it a bit more....

Ok, here's a question, how do you guys have access to so many bathtubs? I see a lot of members here have used them for their systems, I haven't seen a discarded bathtub in years.

Steve in years gone by most houses would have a bath and would frequently use them.... now a lot of new houses don't have them at all and nearly everyone showers....

There are those that have substituted spas for baths....

Almost a thing of the past....

If you go to Home Depot, Lowes or some other building supply and ask if they have damaged tubs, you'll probably find some. Another source is guys who maintain and renovate appartments. Quite often they tear out chipped enamel tubs and replace with fiberglass.

i reccon its all cause houses are gettin smaller, but folks still want a 3 bed 2 bathroom house so with a house block less then 500 squate meters you have to leave out soemthings

this in turn makes baths not trendy (coupled with huge water problems ) people are falling over them selves to get rid of their old baths and go for trendy (and quite often ugly ) modern bathrooms modled after the ones shown on the hypno box (tv)

Cheers
