Starting to look at aquaponics again now that the dome is nearing completion and I will finally have somewhere to set it up.

I would like to start a discussion on what fish and other aquatic critters I can grow in an AP system in the UK.

We are in Cornwall so we have quite mild winters but the system is going to be totally off grid so I wont be able to heat the water unless I use some natural form of heating.

So, what can I grow in the UK?

Thanks Yavimaya

I was talking to a chef the other day about aquaponics and he said he would be very interested if I could grow eels so that is encouraging.

He said is favourite smoked fish was eel.

Can any of the fish you mentioned be grown together or would they need to be separate?

Hi Aman
The micro-climate of your Ft will dictate to some degree your choice of fish.
I would recommend trout but not during June,July and August. Just too hot.
Perch are very hardy but do not eat much with water temperature below 15*c
I am experimenting with Carp. Limited experience to date but also a very hardy species.
Big fish will usually eat little fish.
Eels are exciting but escape specialists. If you are seriously considering them I would suggest additional research.
Good luck

You need heat to grow eel
from here : [PDF]European Eel and Aquaculture - DTU Aqua - Danmarks ... https://www.google.no/search?q=2010_eur ... ygOP7IPIBw

quote :
The ideal temperature range for eels to remain healthy and to efficiently convert feed into growth is 23 - 28 °C

Trout or salmon will probably be your easiest fish to source as fingerling I would think. Gotta love smoked trout.

sorry i listed eels because i thought the freshwater varieties were cold water fish from europe, i guess i was probably wrong though.

with enough shading there is no reason you cant do trout all year round in europe.... that is one of the places they come from after all... You may need a large system though as you will want to keep the water below 25c, which i would be surprised if you ever got water higher than that in england.
