I have little experience of "Brazillian".. Doh!

I know that many cars in Brazil run on high alcohol / petrol blends..

I don't really know how well this contributes to the carbon economy globally ..

Politics and tax etc.. etc... can muddy the equation.

I think that coconut oil powered cars in Bouganville corrently do not pay any fuel tax on the coconut oil.

Taxes, Politics and Govenrments can make or break the viability of a renewable resource.

This is great info for a friend of mine. He runs a surf boat that spends 90% of its time doing missions work now. They work in the Nias area and diesel has sky rocketed. though there are tonnes of coconuts. and one of their community development projects is virgin coconut oil. The extra oil that gets left over would be great for the genny and the boat.

Home-made fuel is how the rebels in Bouganville powered their vehicles.

Steve......good link. These systems powered thousands of cars in Australia (and many other places) during World War 2.

Actually, de-esterification is relatively simple. You just need a non-reactive container to do it. You add a mixture of lye to the oil, agitate it for awhile, and allow the esters (glycerine) to seperate from the oil. Then you remove the de-estered fuel oil. Then to change the cetane rating and lower the point at which solidification occurs you add ethanol.

As to the Brazillians they are running on ethanol derived from sugar cane. They remove the alcohol from the sugar cane, and use the stalks to power the plant to produce both steam heat and electricity! They do the same thing in Florida and Hawaii at the sugar plants there.

There is great emphasis now going on here to research the use of grasses to produce ethanol. If it works out we should see corn prices moderate, which will mean most food products should also go down or stabilize.
