Colum, I would love to be able to set up a regular electronic calorie transfer so you can have some of mine
Seriously, do you eat any meat as that is energy and protein dense? With a calorie intake that low you will be missing out on some essential nutrients such as iron which can reduce energy levels. Its a bit like feeding trout goldfish flakes and expecting them and you plants to grow. Your weight training will help preserve what muscle you have while on a calorie restricted diet, but if you want to grow, get some daily meat, fish, dairy, eggs, tofu, nuts &/or pulses into you. Protein shakes are pretty much just skimmed milk or whey powder with a few 'magic' additives, a pretty label and a big price tag. My ex was into bodybuilding and is a personal trainer.

I've always wanted to bulk a bit, figure it can't hurt to have a go at it.

I generally follow my wife's diet, so she's cut out carbs, and things like that. Then it's usually lots of wraps, salads, I don't like potatoes, so they are never in there. I just didn't think I'd be so far under, but I was probably starving myself, and it explains why I didn't put much muscle on.

You're welcome to send the carbs in my direction.

Looks like I'll be eating more chicken, eggs, red meat, and just more food.

Been into weight lifting for about 3.5 to four years now, 3-4 days a week; developing a fair bit of upper body strength.
Not really fond of the walking/ swiveling machines as they tend to jam your fingers when you load them on and off the truck. Not as bad as bicycles though, not only do they move without warning but tend to get tangled up with everything.
There again my mate hates lawnmowers so I suppose its a matter of what has given you grief. :)

I've got to really love scotch. A mate and I have tasting sessions of different scotches and good ones have magnificent flavours. Just having a limeburners local Albany scotch and water at the moment. Can't understand why I used to mix it with lolly water when I was younger

Spent a few days in Melbourne last weekend and the beginning of the week. Love Melbourne's food and coffee. Had the best macchiato I have ever had, and it only cost $3.50. So much cheaper than the coffee back here in WA. Food was cheaper too. I have often thought that the serving sizes are too big back here, and the prices higher than they need to be. A bowl of pasta with prawns, squid, mussels & fish for $23. It would be over $30 in Perth. Oh and service, the staff couldn't do enough for you.

And then I discovered, that all the trams running inside the city centre are free, not just the tourist tram that rattles around the outside, so we could make our way almost anywhere we wanted.

Well done Melbourne.

PS. Still wouldn't want to live there. It never made it over 12 degrees the whole time we were there. It hasn't got down to 12 at night here, but its a great place to visit, and we never made it out of the CBD until we drove down to Colac, and then returned via the Great Ocean Road.

Colum,I remember one of of my former players who was a dynamic player, but needed to be a bit stronger and she was trying to gain 5-10 lbs of lean muscle. She was drinking extra protein shakes and working out. Mass builders like squats, bench, and power cleans. After 1 month, she had lost 1 pound! This was a young lady who was 107 lbs at around 5'4". I told her to write down everything that went in her mouth for the whole week. Surprise,-she was consuming about 1600 calories a day. She was training 4-6 times per week on the pitch, then working with the weights 3 additional times. She, like you needed around 5000 calories a day just to stay "even". Then add an additional 500 calories if she wanted to gain muscle. There a very good guide that will tell you exactly how any calories you need based on your weight and activity. Not knowing your activity level, I can't tell you exactly, but it probably closer to 3500 then your current starvation. I was 145 in high school. I'm an ectomorph, and was playing tennis 6 hours a day, so gaining has always been hard. I managed to get to about 165, but was very strong, particularly legs and core, which was great for the sport. Like someone mentioned, you need more carbs and lean protein. Sweet potatoes, brown rice, chicken breast, fish, and the shakes will help. make sure you always drink a shake right after working out, that's when your body needs the protein. Also, don't do lots of reps and cut the cardio to once a week. Stick with lower reps, higher weight, and you will gain muscle. You just have to give your body what it needs. Tax the muscles and provide them fuel, they'll get stronger. Don't work any body part more then twice a week, and rest at least 1 day per week. You can do abs and light cardio on your day off if you feel like your missing something.

That player, is still only 115lb, but she is playing professionally in Sweden. Still the best player I've ever coached in that sport.
