The problem is getting the elvers. Last time I looked into the licenses were already pre purchased.

We go fishing for catfish in the rivers on a family friends farm and he told us to do it because they destroy the yabbie populations.

ImageEel is very big business in China and Taiwan, lots and lots of corp focus on raising eels. Japanese love them: Unaju don. Eel rice.

But they only raise them in shallow ponds, haven't figure out how to sprawn.

Actually a lot more than the catfish, eels can get into their burrows. I read an article by Rob McCormack that eels can totally wipe out a yabbie dam stock in one season.

If you can link for me where what I have done is illegal, Ill happily stop doing it. If not - butt out.

If your worried about the native eels, you definitely won't be happy about the millions of native kangaroos Ive shot over the years.

Fair enough.

Its more the senseless waste that I object to rather the them being killed per se. Same with kangaroos. It is unbeliveably stupid that we don't have a larger Kangaroo meat and leather industry. I don't know the legislation for Kangaroos in NSW but in Victoria you need a culling permit.

Dont be one of those people charlie, animals have a right to live too, no matter what your religion told you, animals are people too and deserve to be treated as such.
also the most important point - people are worse than animals, not better.

Now, as far as eels go, well your friend mustnt be a proper farmer.... or he would love the yabbies gone so his dams stop being wrecked.

Oh and yes its illegal.

At least in NSW. I haven't got on to anyone in Qld yet.

Catching and killing eels for recreational fishing is legal as long as bag limits and size restrictions are adhered to. The deliberate destruction of native animals including fish is not covered by the recreational fishing legislation but rather by wildlife protections legislation.
