When talking about OEM versions of Windows, it's fairly straightforward.

OEM - A copy of Windows tied to a specific set of hardware. Essentially, you can install it on one computer only (although you can upgrade components of said computer). Generally what is supplied with an off-the-shelf computer.

Retail Copy - A boxed version of the OS that is not restricted to any specific hardware. It can be installed on more than one computer (although they don't want the single license running on more than one computer at the same time).

Retail versions cost more because you are paying for the ability to reuse the license when you replace your computer. OEM is really easiest thought of as a 'once off' copy.

Hadn't really thought about this subject much before but I guess it makes sense, how else can you buy a laptop with OS for $300 when buying a copy of the OS by itself costs $150?

Because you are buying a crap laptop which costs bugger all to produce. Intel and AMD control the CPU and (if it even has one) the GPU market. To make it plain they set the price of those and the Chinese just build round it.

Azira I assume you are similar in age to Yav; just because Microsoft says its so makes it right?
Sorry they something somethinged( I like that word) far better operating systems up the something to gain an almost monopoly, and then find other ways to something you. :)

The warranty for WD black HDD is only 1 year if bought installed in a laptop but if you buy the HDD separately the warranty is 5 years for the exact same HDD. found this out the hard way :upset: :upset:

I think you will find Australian consumer protection laws would trump their warranty policies.

Giver consumer affairs a call and see what they say.

Can still get a refund especially if they denied your warranty claim.

I have no idea how old Yav is, but I was just pointing out how it tends to be with Windows licensing, not that I agree with it in any way.

Unfortunately they aren't the worst I've encountered though.

I am not anti licensing. I have actually bought oem licensed windows in the past. A retailer here sells it when you but a major component of a computer like a motherboard or cpu. It specifically says that Microsoft WILL NOT provide support for it, as it is oem, and it is the job of the oem, ie HP or Dell or you if you are going to build the computer, to support it. That being said, as a consumer, you do have choices. You can pay a lot for an operating system that is relatively easy to operate and has a support hotline, or you can load a free Linux based os that is slightly more complicated to operate and has no support. You also have the option of purchasing an Apple where the consumer experience is highly controlled. Personally, I stopped building computers, and use mostly tablets. I like my android tablet a bit more than my Apple tablet. In ther rare instance I need Winblows, I boot up my laptop, wait for all of the updates to load... remind myself that it is winblows, and that I need to be patient. Thankfully it is a rare experience. My mother actually gave Mrs. Maggi her old windows phone, we have yet to put her Sim card in, because none of want to have to deal with the Windows experience more than we have to. So after all of that, my stance is that I am not anti licensing, but pro consumer choice.

I suspect the price paid for OEM would still easily compensate all the R&D and palm greasing needed to make a retail copy OS easily the most profitable product on the planet. Oligopoly/monopolys can do that.

This is where I remind myself that I should have learned linux a couple of decades ago. Never had the guts to reformat my computer and give it a go (what if I can't get the thing to do whatever?! I'll be stuck without a computer forever! )

They have me by my nose hairs and I am willing to be led wherever they will as long as I can do the things I feel I need to on my computer. I suspect I am not an orphan when it comes to this way of thinking.

One OS to rule them all. Be happy, mere user. :notworthy:

I'm soooo wishing I did that on my puter rather than a pure linux install, doesn;t take much to leave a small partition on your HD.

I've spent probably the last year trying to do some body building, three times a week with free weights. I've been putting on a small amount of muscle, but nothing overly exciting, more toned, and been slowly increasing the weights I can pick up, but always slow.

So I signed up to myfitnesspal, and it's basically a calorie counter. My wife has been dieting too, so I've been eating the same, but I've never been a big eater, so it's fine. But lately, I've had a lack of energy, and feeling tired a lot.

So I put in my daily meals, and I've been eating around 1,400 calories a day. With trying to put on muscle, age/weight/activity level, I should be eating 3,100 calories. So I have to more than double the amount I'm eating every day.

How am I supposed to eat twice as much each day? And yes, I'm already eating a lot of ice cream, and taking protein shakes (I need an extra 100g of protein each day as well, on top of the protein shakes I'd already been taking).
