Has anyone tried culantro? (Not cilantro).

I am finding ginger is easy to grow. Especially in low light (i.e. My indoor system.)

Durian and Lychee and other true trees (ie not banananas and papaya) can get very large and have equally large root systems. Unless you have extremely deep media beds I would just grow them in the soil in tropical areas. Guavas are so hardy and drought-resistant that it seems like a waste growing them in AP systems even though they are fairly small trees as far as things go. But bananas and papaya are technically herbaceous plants and have shallower, less extensive root systems and should perform better in AP systems, particularly dwarf varieties. One other note about Durian is that they are ultra-tropical and do not perform well in places that get temps below 50 degrees at some point in the year.

An old thread but reading up on Durian it brought back some old memories, I've tried too eat Durian on 2 or 3 occasions but never actually made the cut.

My last effort was in Indonesia on a Durian farm I had the right frame of mind to tackle it and it was going my first taste of Durian but when I arrived the first thing they asked me was if I drank beer and when I said yes, they said no Durian for you, apparently beer and Durian aren't a good mix.

I've always seen it here in Australia in Asian food stores everywhere but now it's even available at Woolworths.

Absolutely the worst thing I have ever tried to eat! On one of my trips to the Philippines. I opened one and started to wipe the slime off what I thought would be the edible part. To my dismay my wife and her friends informed me the slime was the edible part. I managed to get it into my mouth. Where it promptly exited. Never to be tried again. I do however suggest the "Queen of fruits", Rambutan.

Mangosteen is in all kinds of "superfood" drinks stateside.

@floridafishin - I am not 100% sure if Rambutan is the Queen of fruits, but in Penang, Malaysia, it is usually the Mangosteen that is being refereed to as the queen of fruits due to the fact that they come into season as the same time with the king of fruits the durian.

And staying true to the asian believes, while the durian is heaty when consumed, the mangosteen is cooling. So when consumed together it brings balance. Not sure how accurate this is.

Those that like durian should visit Malaysia, we have some of the best verities, come to think of it the season is currently starting, should be in its peak one to two more month from now.

In the Phil's at least in my wife's area (eastern Mindanao). It is Rambutan. Although now I can't wait to get a Mangosteen.

My wife is from Cebu and Mangosteen is a favourite down there, the Durian as widely accepted.
