There is another excellent method that works well on a patch of grass that you wish was a garden.

Lay 10 sheets of overlapping newspaper all over the plot you want to turn into a garden. [that's ten deep everywhere, not ten spread out over the plot]

Spread out your rainbow of seed potatoes all over the paper.

Cover in poopy straw mulch.

Water.

Wait.

Repeat until whatever time it is that potatoes are harvested.

If you keep adding mulch the plants grow up and out and set more roots. More roots equal more potatoes.

We did the paper thing with a 1/8 acre block to keep the weeds down, but we planted a 40kg bag of peas instead of potatoes. It worked well.

And to keep it all on topic, once you harvest, you can turn the new grass, and weed free area into your second aquaponics green house!

See BW I am stalking your entire life.
What youve said here is a common misconception. The Potato tuber is in fact a part of the stem, not the root of the plant.
The 'eyes' of the potato are growth buds of the plant.

If you want to grow AP spuds (this bit is my own surmise) you need to take this into consideration. ie roots go into your tank water, but the stem and the tubers all need to be supported and kept in the dark. Any part of the plant exposed to light can become green and green=poisonous.

They still rock Ron. Some even capsize! I know BW is only traversing the placid Murray River, but all it takes is another vessel or even a fat duck landing to 'rock the boat'.

Not so much capsize as cartwheel into a more stable position. ..

depends if you are going directly into the wind or not. even with a catamaran :-P You might get away with it in a hydrofoil though

Bull Thanks for your kind reply. I have not stopped reading. Now up to P128, and have read most of those other threads too.

Im working on a constant top up from rain water theory. I hope rainwater isnt bad for the fish!
I hate wet weather but then my IBC would never get filled. I cant wait forever for fish!

"Do I need to plumb the holes in any of the three containers at a different hight than the others? " No you dont. put em all at the same level will be ok. But in a boat (an unstable platform) the levels will be constantly changing anyway. I know. Im a sailor.

Most rain water should be fine.

But check the pH.

Also make sure your rainwater tank isn't galvanised iron. If it is make sure it has a plastic liner, otherwise the fish will get heavy metal poisoning from the zinc and will all die.

re potatoes- interesting.

re catamarans - I cant remember the actual topic, but my hulls are a sealed (ish) unit (with bung plugs) and they are slowly being filled with the almost unbreakable (you can jump on them when inflated) 10L bladders from boxed water. (ie like a wine cask bladder (ie ie like an inflatable pillow)). I have an 8 inch PVC screw cap siliconed into the top of each hull at the rear. I put the bladders in empty, then blow them up inside the hulls and push them up toward the front. This way I should be able to stay afloat even if I run into an ice burg (or whatever).

On the trip I plan on wasting a couple of freshwater test kits to map the levels of nutrient in the water, and also plan on growing two NFT tubes of green leafy repeat harvest salad greens running the length of the boat on either side. I'll connect them to my aquaponics system to get them going, then transfer them to the boat when on the river.

I still haven't found out if I'm going to have a problem with going across the state border with growing plants. I have so much to do and so little time. I need an assistant to help with the actual build and testing.

And a solar boat that works!

I'm really going to need a solar boat that works.

BW I dont think we Victorians will give a hoot if your plants travel over the border, though if you are on the water I think you will legally be in NSW.

Most people put scrap styrene foam chunks in their hulls. they can never ever pop. But some of your bags could have liquid refreshments for the trip! Putting things low in the hull (below water line) helps stabilise the temperature nicely.

I have finally completed reading this entire thread, start to finish, some of it twice. Why cant I sleep? Do I get a prize?

At some point in the future, this particular post will be smack in the middle of this thread.

If for some reason you find yourself reading this entire thread, who ever you are, and for whatever reason, I recommend you stop IMMEDIATELY.

It doesn't get any better.

In fact from this point on, it just repeats itself.

Forever.

You just want people to leave on a good note... :)

I'll help make sure they get the message.

I like reading this thread with a couple of ciders under my belt, but was showing withdrawals. Read it sober and still got a giggle! Keep up the good work BW!
