I think I've mentioned myself somewhere else, but I'm 2 months into a home pacu system out of Winnipeg, MB. Raising them indoors first, then moving them out to an IBC to finish their growout, for harvesting in September/October. They've almost tripled their size in 6 weeks.

I've been doing AP in Yellowknife for last 4 years. I go indoors in my basement during the winter and outdoors in a pond in the summer. I just started reading the forums again after a bit of a break.

Wow. Yellowknife. I'm impressed. :notworthy:
What fish, and how big is your system?
For those of you who don't know, yellowknife is just a few hundred km south of the arctic circle, a smidge north of anchorage alaska. Far enough north to get midnight sun in june, and none in december. Also not close to any moderating influences, being somewhat central to northern canada,
This was taken at midnight. (not mine, but a great photo)

Hi! I'm in Edmonton, Alberta and have a summer aquaponics system. I have a 350 gallon fish tank with 9 small to medium koi. My grow beds are supplemented with liquid algae as plant food but I grew amazing amounts of herbs and greens last summer and my koi wintered in my unheated garage with no food!!! I'm planting greens again this year but trying to design a koi pond to feed flowers in the center of my circular driveway. I'm wondering if I can design it just like my other bell siphon drain grow beds. Right now my fish tank is covered and protected from the sun. My koi pond won't be. So do you think I'll need the skimmer and uv light and more filtration? Or can I build it just like what I have now? My system never really matures as I shut it down and drain it each fall. Koi are great because when it gets Alberta cold they also go dormant.

I'm a few weeks into my system up here in Prince George, BC. It's just a small system in an apartment so the cold isn't too much of a concern for me. Any tips on good spots for AP supplies in BC/Canada are greatly appreciated!!

Sorry, just noticed this response now. I keep koi and goldfish in a 560 L outdoor pond with a 4 ' x 4' gravel growbed. Last fall I noticed the growbed was leaking and was planning on digging it out this fall to reline. Unfortunately I broke my ankle (fibula spiral fracture) this spring and I'm just getting back on my feet now. I've got fish in my pond, but nothing flowing through the GB.

On the plus side my wife and I have discovered rain gutter grow systems and growbags. They are very easy to make and growth has dwarfed my AP systems. I think I'm going to convert my GB into a wicking system, either flow through or open system. I've said this in another thread, but I just don't get the temperatures or season length for AP to establish itself.

I bought a few more koi in Alberta for myself and family. I'm halfway home with them right now and they are relaxing in my hotel with me. Got them in a cooler with an air stone. When I'm driving I keep the lid shut, but when I stop for a bit I hook the air pump up to an inverter and top off the DO.

Thanks for the reply. I presume you move the koi inside for the winter?
I saw your post about wicking beds. Makes sense given your seasons. As they say, different horses for different courses.
I'm working up some modified wicking beds for some larger plants (okra, papaya, and other small trees) mostly so that they are semi mobile.
Good luck, and have a safe drive.
