Lol 2 nd system is the go Gordon, can you have too much aquaponics? Think of all the experimenting you could do.

They were fingerlings I got late May I think it was. They were quite small then probably 6 mm? I was hesitating to bother with trout again next year but with a bounty like I just got I just can't wait to get more in. In the interim I am going to put my pool silver perch in the AP because my pool pond thing isn't workjng out so I'm throwing in the towel. Will write more on that in my natural pool conversion thread.

Happy days... The smell of that smoking trout and the blistering heat has become our Kurrajong xmas tradition. Time to make the xmas cake I think. I soak it in a bottle of kahlua. Lots of nuts inside and you just can't beat it.

Hey colours!
I was asking about what fish to keep in Kurrajong in another post and was redirected here by another member.

I'm just starting up my system so I am new here's, do you have any suggestions? At this point I'm thinking trout or silver perch.

Do you have to cool the water for your trout when it gets hot here or do they do well without cooling?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey there Thinggy 42 os glad yr bringing AP to Kurrajong! As you know it gets really hot and really cold here. When I first moved here during winter it was routinely -6 deg, once -10. It has also been 44.

I have had great success with rainbow trout. I harvest mine around xmas time, smoke them all, vacuum seal, and freeze. makes great xmas presents, great for the xmas table and then I have trout all year from my salads.

I also have silver perch but it will be getting a little chilly soon to get fingerlings. They would survive better if you get larger fish or wait until spring. I have really only used silver perch to keep my system cycled until I get more trout (which you can do as the night time temps cool, now would be ok).

I'm not sure there is much else you can get here (happy for people to prove me wrong). Too cold for Barra, too cold for Jades. Murray cod may work but I have no experience and it seems a little fiddly for me, I'm pretty busy. Salmon may be another option if you can find a source. I hear it outperforms trout, but its a bit of a watch this space topic. Do a search hint hint.

Good luck with your choice and keep us posted.
