I think that pistol owners have to have them kept under lock and key as well. I do have a .22 but it doesn't live here,

Basically the Law states NO semi-auto/auto guns, unless there is a good and valid reason. Eg. Sports Shooting with written proof from officials and club owner, Farmers can apply to have a semi auto rifle.

Hand guns are banned, unless used by a competitor in Commonwealth or Olympic sports shooting.

Paintball guns come under a sub class of Handguns, you need reference from a club, all the rig moral of obtaining a license and a hand gun safe, bolted to two concrete surfaces.

I used to do rifle shooting so I had (Dad owns) an AirRifle and a .22 rifle. When I was 18 I wanted to licence them under me. The cop basically said come back when you are 21 the paperwork would be a lot easier.

AirSoft guns (BB guns) are illegal.

Dubya and Deputy Sherriff are 2 of my least favourite people. However after a gun toting massacre in Tasmania 10 yrs ago, our PM insisted on tighter gun laws and stared down the gun lobby. It was one of his finest moments.

In the US a president gets his head blown off and nothing is done about gun control.

There's a cultural difference for ya. We need look no further than SW Virginia for it's modern incarnation. Those who don't learn from history's mistakes...............

Having stood down from my soapbox now, my greatest thrill on this forum is the correspondence from our friends Stateside and elsewhere internationally. It makes the world seem smaller and friendlier. Just wish you guys would finally see the light on gun control.

I think gun control doesn't do much more than give the public a false sense of security. Here in the states (and probably other countries as well) if you want a gun you can get one without a permit (illegally) as long as you know where the seedy section of town is. Drugs and prostitution are illegal and those problems still exist.
Something more than tighter gun laws needs to be done about it. Unfortunately the decades of lenient gun laws have already put too many guns on the streets. It's like closing the barn door after the cows got out.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the oft quoted "right to bear arms" actually say...

"The right to bear arms in reasonable support of a militia" or something to that affect.....

That in fact it's not really defined as an individual right as such within the constitution???

Amendment 2 - Right to Bear Arms. Ratified 12/15/1791.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I don't think their grammer was very clear, personnally.

Someone made reference to American TV shows, In general, how much of our culture are you guy's exposed to?(vehicles, TV, products, movies, food, ect...)

From my side, everything I know about Australia I learned from the Crocodile hunter and the Mad Max trilogy and eating at the Outback Steakhouse

Are the boomerang wielding feral children still a problem out in the bush?

Stevo, as I'm originally a Kiwi (NZ) I perhaps see Australia from a slightly different perspective to someone who's been born here.... although I've been here myself for thirty years....

That in itself though gives me a perspective over time....

My opinion.... Australia has so completely embraced American lifestyle, culture and values in the last decade or so that I believe we are/think as clones....

The embracement of American culture is almost universal in terms of media influence.... yet there is STILL something uniquely Australian inherent within this country....

Our vertically and intellectually challenged political leader often makes reference to Australian values (usually along the lines of "all right thinking people...".... yet most people would be hard pressed to really define what those Australian values are and what we as Australians are and or should be....

In a sense I believe Australia is in the midst of an identity crisis and embraces American culture like a security blanket (more ways than one LOL).....

See... really we lack the centuries of history that for better or worse define a nations collective soul....

Hopefully in searching for it we don't circum to the worst and most base of human behaviour.... I worry we may do so in light of the way in which we are currently looking backward rather than forward and acting accordingly....

Frankly in some ways I think we're scared of pursuing our unique and individual identity on the world stage..... we're teenagers afraid to actually leave the comfort of the nest.

"how much of our culture are you guy's exposed to"

IMO...TOO much... In no way is it against the people of the US. Food, Cars, Language and TV.... We manage to pick up or adopt most of your least liked behaviors through these mediums. I think someone referred to it as the Hollywood picture of the US. Like reality TV.....

Our kids are so easily influenced. I know we can't cut ourselves off. It is Australian network TV that is at fault. It is cheaper and more profitable to show US shows than it is to produce and air Australian shows. Plus whenever any of you fart we all know about. We hear so much terrible news from the states, you can blame us for discriminating.

Have a look (3 out 4 main commercial stations):

http://www.ten.com.au/ten/tvshows.html (Channel 10)
http://au.tv.yahoo.com/tv/ (Channel 7 hmmm. yahoo...)
http://channelnine.ninemsn.com.au/ (Has a good AU lineup- msn?).
SBS is hard to get in some areas, they mostly play soft core mandarin movies.....
ABC this is the one our taxes pay for.... has the best stuff IMHO... Chaser, Australian Story, had Cath and Kim, except for West Wing (better than parliment viewing I suppose).

For laughs check out the Chasers vodcasts
http://www.abc.net.au/tv/chaser/war/vodcast/
.... very funny. They push the envelope a bit too far sometimes though.

Again I don't mean any offense.
