I found some quotes that I feel address this discussion somewhat.

Hubert Humphrey:
"The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously."

C. Wright Mills:
"Freedom is not merely the opportunity to do as one pleases; neither is it merely the opportunity to choose between set alternatives. Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate the available choices, to argue over them -- and then, the opportunity to choose."

Marie Ebner von Eschenbach:
"Whenever two good people argue over principles, they are both right."

Michel de Montaigne:
"I quote others only in order to better to express myself."

Homer Simpson:
"Marge? Since I'm not talking to Lisa, would you please ask her to pass me the syrup?"

Ranpmiller, if you feel that anyone is making derogatory or prejudice statements, please contact either myself or one of the other admin or moderators, and something will be done about it straight away.

However, in this instance I think that the original comment made by Murray was not derogatory, and possibly points to the fact that he is similar to yourself in many ways.

I tend to "go off like a biting sow" (to use a local phrase) with little or no forethought when confronted with what I perceive to be anti-american, anti-government or anti-war comments even on the most trivial level

The article contained political statements, so it was bound to raise further political statements..

This seems to be the standard responce of the vocal minority in western societies. The attitude of these people completely amazes me, people want to eat meat products, want them to be biosecure, disease and chemical free and from locally sourced areas. So when somebody deceides to built an operations like this one, the vocal minority complains and protests!!!

Some groups of people will never be pleased and it is specifically groups of people like this who should NEVER be pandered too. If they dont like the view from their properties, plant trees or build a wall to block it out!!! And if they don't like the legal development of industry within their area, MOVE!

I have worked in aquaculture in 4 states in Australia and continually heard people complain about the industry, yet it provided a valuable food source, provided well paid local employment and is less damaging to the environment than over exploited wild caught fisheries.

Ranpmille, sorry if I "pressed your button"
As someone said a bit further up the post, the whole Iraq thing is very devisive here in Aussie as I expect it is in the US. I feel for the troops there now trying to do their best with a very sticky problem. I just wish someone would call it by it's right name, a "religious war" between two branches of the same religion. What would we call it if the Baptists were bombing the Catholics on a daily basis.
Anyway, sorry if I offended.
We should all take up arms (some cucumbers and carrots) and force the government to subsidise our AP systems.
It is a just and worthwhile cause.

What do you think now that the Murray/Darling (not Murray the Darling) is almost out of water. Just watch the price of vegies go through the roof. I will have to hire a security firm to guard my grow beds at night !!!!

Muzza

Sorry to go back on topic... ;)

In the US we call these people NIMBYs. It stands for Not In My Backyard. There are a lot of people who want all sorts of improvements, both public and private, but somewhere over there where they can't be seen.

I could go on and on about good ideas that have been shot down because of NIMBYs. Some highlights include wind farms, oil/gas drilling platforms off the coast of Florida, mass transit in my city, etc.

I don't know if it's an American cultural thing or just people in general not giving a shit. Either way, since most people don't vote it leads to the pluralism of the vocal minority swaying the government.
