Hey suzzi1a welcome.
OC has an awesome climate for backyard systems. I lived in lake forest for most of my life (I'm in the SB mountains now). This forum has a ton of information and most questions have been answered so that search box is very handy :thumbleft:

Hi, Love SB, both my brothers went to UCSB........I'm in LF a lot...My daughter go's to ET. Anyway, were in Modjeska Canyon under a canopy of Oak trees, with filtered light. Not to mention the wildlife obstacles we'll be encountering, so I'm thinking I'll probable need a green house? Not sure... Any suggestions?

Small world, I went to ET. I don't think a greenhouse is absolutely necessary but it wouldn't hurt. There are other cheaper measures to keep the animals away but a GH would defiantly help protect your fish and plants. I lived in Portola hills by cooks corner so ip pretty familiar with your area. You don't want bobcats or mtn lions getting to your fish. And deer would love to get the greens.

Thanks for the input....It really is a small world, my youngest went to Portola hills Elem... So maybe just a fence around it, but I'm still not sure the systems would get enough light through oak trees. It's pretty shaded here. There's a rule of three, here. Plant two for the wildlife and one for yourself... :)

I guess it depends on what you want to grow. Would it be possible to trim back a branch on an oak to let some light in?

No, there are too many, large old mature trees all the way around our house. Where the fires didn't burn down.

I guess you could always supplement with grow lights but that's just another added expense, and then you have to pay to keep them on.

suzzi1a,

Welcome to the forum! Another thing to consider. You will also have to contend with keeping all the oak leaves out of your system water.

Depending on the size of your system. Screen material from home depot stapled to a frame would be a cheap option.
